"Successful Application Reconfiguration" and SupportAssist
Every day several times a day, I see "Successful Application Reconfiguration"s in the Reliability Monitor for all of my Windows 10/Pro apps. These informational events can number up to 1300 of them in a day, depending on how many times this set of events is triggered. It all has to do with the operation of SupportAssist. If SupportAsssist is not installed, these events do not occur. But, when they do occur because SupportAssist is installed, it reduces the Reliability Monitor Stability Index to 1 and decreases performance. There is some kind of incompatability between SupportAssist and other actions of Windows 10 that is causing these Reconfiguration events to occur. It is not normal behavior (although a Dell agent tried to convince me that it is). There is something about SupportAssist that causes this problem. The SupportAssist Team needs to investigate it. I do not want to solve the problem by uninstalling SupportAssist. I want the Dell SupportAssist team to solve this problem by fixing SupportAssist so that it does not cause a "Successful Application Reconfiguration" event.
See https://www.dell.com/community/SupportAssist-for-PCs/XPS-8930-SupportAssist-and-Reliability-Monitor/m-p/7310226#M87983 for a report that uninstalling SupportAssist solves the problem.

I had actually never heard of Macrium, but I researched it and it seems to be a viable alternative if Dell doesn't get their together. Even the free version is rated very highly. I'm also looking at EaseUS Todo Backup

The SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools will need to collect its related components’ information by making the WMI call to the Win32_Product. This takes place about 30 minutes after the user’s login has occurred. The MicroSoft website says that this is a byproduct of calling the Win32_Product which will lead to this problem. The following comments are from Microsoft website:
Win32_product class isn't query optimized. Queries such as select * from Win32_Product where (name like 'Sniffer%') require WMI to use the MSI provider to enumerate all of the installed products and then parse the full list sequentially to handle the where clause. This process also starts a consistency check of packages installed, verifying, and repairing the install. An account with only user privileges may cause delay in application launch and an event 11708 stating an installation failure, as the user account may not have access to quite a few locations.
Please visit the URL attached: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/windows-server/admin-development/windows-installer-reconfigured-all-applications for more details.

Hi NikhilKiroula:
Thank you for following up on this
This issue with the Win32_Product class was already raised <here> on page 1 of this thread. As I noted there, the information I found in the MS support article Event Log Indicates That the Windows Installer Reconfigured All Installed Applications (the same article you referenced) suggests that the software developer should re-code the offending software so that it queries the "lighter" Win32reg_AddRemovePrograms class instead of Win32_Product class (which in turn calls msiprov.dll to perform the consistency check).
My Windows user account has Administrator rights but when I unhide hidden items in File Explorer and browse to C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\ I see this:
Since we already had a general idea of the cause of these "Successful Application Reconfiguration" errors, what is the solution? Is Dell planning to re-code SupportAssist Remediation / SupportAssist OS Recovery so that it queries the Win32reg_AddRemovePrograms class instead of the outdated Win32_Product class? Could these "Successful Application Reconfiguration" errors be eliminated if Dell revised the permissions for the C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\ folder to give the Administrators and Users groups Read access?
Or are you saying that there's something wrong with our Windows user accounts and/or folder permissions and that the problem lies on our end?

This is becoming enough to make you crazy. Today I got another deluge of "successful application reconfigurations" WITH Dell Support Assist Remediation disabled. It hadn't happened in over a week since disabling it and it's still disabled
I've just about reached the end of my tether with Dell Support Assist

Hi SilverLogan:
What versions of Dell SupportAssist and Dell SupportAssist Remediation are currently listed at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features, and how did you disable Dell SupportAssist Remediation?
If you turned off System Repair in the SupportAssist settings [Options (gear icon) | Settings | System Repair | System Repair is Turned On | DISABLED] or in the SupportAssist OS Recovery control panel (Control Panel | System and Security | SupportAssist OS Recovery | Settings | System Repair | DISABLED) and one of those programs recently updated it's always possible that something you previously disabled has re-enabled itself. My SupportAssist auto-updated to v3.9.2.57 on 01-Jul-2021.
I changed the Start Type of my Dell SupportAssist Remediation service in Windows Services (Start | Windows Administrative Tools | Services) from Automatic (Delayed Start) to Disabled around 10-May-2021 to ensure this service doesn't start when my system is re-booted. I had four "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events logged on 01-Jul-2021 when my MS Office Home and Business 2019 C2R updated, and I've noticed that one of these events is logged when the Microsoft Store applies a background update to one of my Win 10 UWP apps, but I haven't seen another daily flood of 192 of these "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events that appear ~ 30 min after boot-up (4 repeating sets for the same 48 installed programs) since my Dell SupportAssist Remediation service was disabled.

Hello!
Dell Support Assist is the same as yours 3.9.2.57. Dell Support Assist Remediation is 5.4.1.14954
As far as how I disabled Dell SupportAssist Remediation - Start > Windows Administrative Tools > Services > Right Click on Dell SupportAssist Remediation > Properties > Changed Startup Type To Disabled. Rebooted. Waited 15 minutes...Startup Type showed as disabled and Status was blank
It currently shows Startup Type as Disabled and Status is blank
My Support Assist updated on 6/29. It HAS been behaving after that update once I followed your helpful advice on disabling Remediation. I have no idea what occurred last night for me to be deluged again.
(Raising my hands in my "I'm about to give up" pose)

Hi SilverLogan:
Were any new files created in C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\ with a date stamp of 05-Jul-2021, the same day that this deluge of Successful Application Reconfiguration events appeared in the Win 10 Reliability Monitor? Approx. how many of these Successful Application Reconfiguration events were logged (i.e, is a "deluge" over 100 events)?
If you aren't sure, change the folder settings in your Win 10 File Explorer to show hidden files (View | Hidden Items | ENABLED), launch the TreeSize Free utility with Administrator rights (right-click TreeSizeFree.exe and choose Run As Administrator) and then go to File | Select Directory and browse to the hidden folder at C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\. Have there been any files created recently in the Snapshots or Backup subfolders? If not back up one level and see if any files have been created recently in C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\.
The image below was captured today on my Inspiron 5584 and shows that I haven't had any new files created in those \Snapshots or \Backup subfolders since I disabled the Dell SupportAssist Remediation service on 09-May-2021 and re-booted my computer.

Hi DELLKaren:
Just reporting that an update to the latest SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.3.1535 hasn't fixed the flood of "Successful Application Reconfiguartion" events logged in my Event Viewer (Windows Logs | Application, Source = MsiInstaller, Event ID = 1035) or the Win 10 Reliability Monitor (Control Panel | System and Security | Security and Maintenance | Reliability Monitor).
I posted yesterday in your thread Problems with SupportAssist 3.0.47.10 that my SupportAssist self-updated to v3.10.1.23 and automatically installed a new SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.3.1535 (a.k.a. Dell SupportAssist Remediation) without any warning. This re-enabled System Repair in my SupportAssist settings [Options (gear icon) | Settings | System Repair | System Repair is Turned On | ENABLED] and changed the Startup Type of my Dell SupportAssist Remediation service (Start | Windows Administrative Tools | Services) from DISABLED back to the default AUTOMATIC (DELAYED START). I re-booted my Inspiron 5584 this morning at ~ 6:10 AM with System Repair still enabled and got a flood of ~144 (3 repeating sets of 48 programs) "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events logged between 6:43:46 AM and 6:43:52 AM.
I checked my hidden C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\SnapShots folder with TreeSize Free about 9:00 AM this morning and could see that new files were created today on 30-Jul-2021, but I was surprised to see that folder is currently only using 117 KB of disk space. I was expecting to see at least one large (> 200 MB) system repair point / snapshot created in that folder so I'll have to monitor and see if Dell SupportAssist Remediation is actually creating new system repair points now that System Repair has been re-enabled on my Inspiron 5584.

Thanks for this note and your earlier note about the upgrade of DSA to v 3.10.1.23.
I want to make a comment about the "automatically" in your message. I have two laptops with DSA on them - Dell Inspiron 5482 (a newer model) and Dell Inspiron 7569 (an older model). The manner of the DSA upgrade to v 3.10.1.23 is different on the two machines.
5482 (newer device) -automatic update of DSA, automatic install of plugin, automatic install of SA OS Recovery Tools
On my 5482, DSA automatically updated itself to 3.10.1.23 when I clicked on the DSA icon to open it in the evening of July 30. It also did a Drivers & Downloads scan on its own. (In other words, I did not click on that tile on the DSA Home page.) I know that it ran for three reasons: 1) the date of July 30 shows up in the Get Drivers & Downloads tile; 2) when I click on the History tab, a manual (!) scan is listed with a date of July 30 with no updates available; 3) Apps & features shows that 3.10.1.23 installed on 7/30/2021. The settings are as I had had them – i.e., the box for “Scan your system and drivers” at the Automate Scans and Optimizations option is unchecked. The System Repair option is also ON, with a maximum 18GB. These are not new settings.
Furthermore, Apps & features shows that on 7/30/2021, version 5.4.14954 of the Dell SA OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update automatically installed with DSA version 3.10.1.23, but in point of fact, I myself had already first installed this version of the plugin on April 15 with Dell Update (the Dell ID was JVFGH). And then on June 28 DSA automatically updated itself to 3.9.2.57, at the same time re-installing the same plugin. And the same thing happened on July 9 when DSA again automatically updated itself this time to 3.10.0.47, at the same time re-installing the same plugin. And now the same thing has happened again for the third time – i.e., DSA automatically updating itself, at the same time re-installing the same plugin. Thus, the date of the plugin changes in Apps & features each time, but the version remains the same.
In addition, the History page shows that on July 27, DSA did a Drivers & Downloads scan and found SA OS Recovery Tools, and installed it. I did not make the scan and the installation happen. It happened automatically, although the entry on the History page says that it was done manually. Apps & features reports it as Dell SA Remediation, version 5.4.3.15135. Previously, on April 11 I myself installed SA OS Recovery Tools (version 5.4.14954) via Dell Update and on April 20 I myself installed the same version again via DSA. But this time, July 27, a new version installed on its own via DSA.
Like you, the flood of “Successful application reconfigurations” continues to show up day by day in the Reliability Monitor.
Control Panel>SA OS Recovery>opening message continues to say that it has “paused capturing repair points due to insufficient disk space”, but the Settings tab provides information about current repair points on April 9 when I moved to 20H2, and July 27 and July 30 – the machine was not powered up on July 28 and July 29. TreeSize shows backups -- 22.4 GB worth.
7569 (older device) – elect the update of DSA, automatic install of plugin, elect the install of SA OS Recovery Tools
First off, I need also to say that now the 7569 is listing System Repair (enabled with maximum space of 18GB) in Settings now). In the previous version of DSA, System Repair was not even listed at all in DSA>Settings for the 7569, even though elsewhere, in Control Panel>SupportAssist OS Recovery>Settings, it said that System Repair was there and was ON (enabled).
Unlike the 5482 but like the previous updating of DSA on the 7569, the updating of DSA was a matter of electing to do so, by way of a dialog box asking if I wanted to upgrade to 3.10.1.23 . (In other words, it wasn’t an automatic upgrade in the background, as it was on the 5482).
Like the 5482, Dell SA OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update on the 7569 automatically installed at the same time DSA installed. And like the 5482, it appears to have been merely re-dated. It does not have a new version number (5.4.14954) but it has a new date.
Unlike the 5482, SA OS Recovery Tools appeared on the 7569 in DSA Drivers and Downloads after DSA upgraded, and I could therefore elect to install it or not. (The 5482 had automatically installed it 3 days before the DSA upgrade was automatically installed; and without DSA even being opened, it had recorded this in its History as a manual install). But, like the 5482, it shows up in Apps & features as Dell SupportAssist Remediation with a new version number (5.4.3.15135) and like the 5482, it has the same date as that in the DSA History.
Like the 5482 and like you report, the flood of “Successful application reconfigurations” continues to show up day by day in the Reliability Monitor.
Like the 5482, Control Panel>SA OS Recovery>opening message continues to say that it has “paused capturing repair points due to insufficient disk space”, but the Settings tab provides information about current repair points on April 9 when I moved to 20H2 and on July 30 and July 31. TreeSize shows backups -- 21.5 GB worth.
SUMMARY
So, to summarize in a nutshell the differences between the upgrade of DSA on the 5482 (newer device) vs the 7569 (older device), on the older machine I have control over the DSA upgrade and the installation of SA OS Recovery Tools. To the contrary, on the newer machine, DSA is upgrading automatically and installing SA OS Recovery Tools automatically.
On both machines and like you, the flood of “Successful application reconfigurations” continues to show up day by day in the Reliability Monitor. There is a fix for this (recoding the software), but Dell has chosen not to do so. For other readers and the Dell SupportAssist Team, this fix is outlined in
On both machines, I have never had System Repair OFF. On both machines, Control Panel>SA OS Recovery>opening message continues to say that it has “paused capturing repair points due to insufficient disk space”, but the Settings tab provides information that indicates that it IS capturing repair points, because at Control Panel>SA OS Recovery>Settings, the current repair points are given and the size of the space for the backups keeps increasing. System Repair is adding Repair Points day by day -- even if the space for this is beyond 18GB. This information is corroborated in TreeSizeFree. For the Dell SupportAssist Team: The Control Panel>SA OS Recovery opening message needs to be fixed, because the truth of the matter is that although System Repair is using more than the designated 18 GB of space, it continues to capture repair points.
Given these continuing problems, I’m not confident that System Repair would do its job correctly, were I to ever need it!! At this point, I can afford to give System Repair 20+ GB for it to do its job, but if comes to needing that space down the road, I will turn off System Repair and disable the Dell SupportAssist Remediation service. I already use other imaging software regularly to make system images and to backup my files and folders, so I’m presently not out anything if System Repair doesn’t work.

Hi DELLKaren
Just an FYI that the update to SupportAssist v3.10.1.23 on my Inspiron 5584 only forced the installation of SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.3.15135 but didn't install any of the other available Dell software updates, so the update process was different from what I typically see when I run a manual "Get Drivers & Downloads" scan from the Home tab (note that I have all automated scans disabled at Options (gear icon) | Settings | Automate Scans and Optimizations | Scan Your System and Drivers). Here's what my Home tab looked like shortly after SupportAssist v3.10.1.23 finished installing and I had checked at Option (gear icon) | About to confirm that SupportAssist v3.10.1.23 was installed:
My History tab also shows the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.3.15135 were installed after a "Manual" scan. I originally assumed that Dell considered this a manual update because I triggered the self-update to SupportAssist v3.10.1.23 when I launched SupportAssist v3.10.0.47 and clicked "Yes, Update Now" in a pop-up offering a newer SA version, but your comments now make me think that isn't the case.
This targeted update to SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.3.15135 seems to have created a new problem on my Inspiron 5584. I'm still getting the flood of "Successful Application Reconfiguration" messages in my Event Viewer and Reliability Monitor approx. 30 min after boot-up, but it's been 5 days since SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools updated to v5.4.3.15135 on 29-Jul-2021 and I still haven't had a single system repair point created in C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\. It sounds like you're still seeing new system repair point created in this hidden folder and I didn't want to take your thread off-topic so I've started a new thread at SupportAssist OS Recovery v5.4.3.15135 Not Creating System Repair Points.

On both devices, I also have all automated scans disabled at Options (gear icon) | Settings | Automate Scans and Optimizations | Scan Your System and Drivers)
I've never seen this message on any DSA page, neither on my 5482 (where DSA 3.10.1.23 automatically installed on July 30 -- 3 days after automatically installing SA OS Recovery Tools on July 27 and making an entry about it in SA>History, all unbeknownst to me) nor have I seen it on my 7569 (where there was a pop to install this new version). Your image looks like it is from the splash page -- the one that has a chart headed "90-day summary" on the left and says "Keep your Inspiron xxxx running at its best" below which there's a box that says "Start now" (and if you click this, Optimization, including cleaning the Recycle bin, will begin), and has at the bottom a down arrow to get the page with the 5 tiles on it (which I've been calling the Home page and is always where I want to begin.) If it occurred on the Splash page, I'm sure I would have seen it; it's very noticeable.
I'll look at your new thread, but let me make a comment here. After DSA upgraded to 3.10.1.23, have you enabled System Repair yourself at DSA>Settings or has DSA enabled it for you, when it upgraded? (I think I've read in one or your latest posts that when the new version installed, it automatically enabled System Repair for you.) In either case, this a difference between your system and mine because I've always had System Repair enabled on both devices since the feature was added more than a year ago. As a result, Repair Points keep being added to the hidden C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\. As of today (August 3), on both devices Control Panel>SA OS Recovery>Settings reports a) increased Space Used and b) has new Current Repair Points for the date and time of both August 2 and August 3. The information here at SA OS Recovery>Settings is corroborated by the information in ..\SARemediation\SystemRepair\ in all respects -- a) Space Used has increased and matches that of SA OS Recovery>Settings; b) new backup files for August 2 and 3 are listed with time stamps that match those in SA OS Recovery>Settings.

Hi DELLKaren:
I think you're right, it looks like I captured that image on the SupportAssist splash page instead of the Home tab. Regardless, when I clicked the "Show Me" button I could see that SupportAssist v3.10.1.23 had not finished the forced download and installation of the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.3.15125 (see second image). Perhaps you didn't see that see that "You can continue using this application once we've added OS Recovery" warning in the message banner because the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools had already finished updating on your Inspiron 5482 and 7569.
Thanks for your feedback. Yes, I did have System Repair disabled before the forced installation of SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.4.3.15125 re-enabled the settings. I'll provide further details in my thread SupportAssist OS Recovery v5.4.3.15135 Not Creating System Repair Points tomorrow after I've tried a few tweaks to see if I can get it running correctly and creating system restore points in the hidden C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\ folder.

Actually, on the 5482, SA OS Recovery Tools had been installed unbeknownst to me 3 days before DSA upgraded, also unbeknownst to me. In other words, the two surprising installations were 3 days apart -- SA OS Recovery Tools first, and then 3 days later, DSA.
On the 7569, DSA upgraded via the popup and SA OS Recovery Tools was waiting to be selected for installation. I recall that when I first saw the popup, I said "no" to upgrading and closed the app. Maybe, it went ahead and did a "Get drivers and downloads," even though I had closed the app, and therefore, the next time I opened DSA, saw the popup, and said "yes", there was no need for the banner.
The banner seems to be a new feature, which I missed this time, but I will be on the look out for it when there is future DSA upgrade.
Thanks for documenting this.

Hi DellKaren:
Just a warning that SupportAssist updated my SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools to v5.5.0.16041 on 21-Oct-2021 and re-enabled System Repair and my Dell SupportAssist Remediation service without warning.
A few days after the update to v5.5.0.16041 I happened to notice that System Repair had been turned back on in my Support Assist settings [Options (gear icon) | Settings | System Repair | System Repair Is Turned On] so I turned it OFF again, and this deleted the GBs of unwanted Dell system repair points accumulating in my hidden C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair folder.
However, I forgot to disable the Dell SupportAssist Remediation service and just realized today that hundreds of these "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events are being logged again in my Win 10 Reliability Monitor and Event Viewer every day.
I stopped the Dell SupportAssist Remediation service at Start | Windows Administrative Tools | Services and changed the Start Type from "Automatic (Delayed Start)" to "Disabled" and assume this will once again stop the daily logging of these "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events. If this trick doesn't work this time after my system is rebooted I'll post back with an update.

@DELL-Cares
I just wanted to affirm that, even though this post is from 2021, [and @DELL-Cares claimed that the support team is looking into it, and several updated versions of Support Assist (and its many many attached services and processes) ] , this type of issue is still occuring as of today (9/13/23).
I know that the only real way to "solve" this issue is to completely uninstall all of Dell's "support" software. Being as gullible as I am, I have Premium Plus Support for my XPS 8950 for another few months, so I would like to be able to use a version of Support Assist that is free of bugs on my desktop. Any updates? Thank you all for bringing this hard earned information and experience to my access in this forum. Sometime I feel like I am taking crazy pills dealing with the incredible numbers of errors generated by Dell's software.
