"Successful Application Reconfiguration" and SupportAssist

Every day several times a day, I see "Successful Application Reconfiguration"s in the Reliability Monitor for all of my Windows 10/Pro apps.  These informational events can number up to 1300 of them in a day, depending on how many times this set of events is triggered.  It all has to do with the operation of SupportAssist.  If SupportAsssist is not installed, these events do not occur.  But, when they do occur because SupportAssist is installed, it reduces the Reliability Monitor Stability Index to 1 and decreases performance.  There is some kind of incompatability between SupportAssist and other actions of Windows 10 that is causing these Reconfiguration events to occur.  It is not normal behavior (although a Dell agent tried to convince me that it is).  There is something about SupportAssist that causes this problem.  The SupportAssist Team needs to investigate it.  I do not want to solve the problem by uninstalling SupportAssist.  I want the Dell SupportAssist team to solve this problem by fixing SupportAssist so that it does not cause a "Successful Application Reconfiguration" event.

See https://www.dell.com/community/SupportAssist-for-PCs/XPS-8930-SupportAssist-and-Reliability-Monitor/m-p/7310226#M87983 for a report that uninstalling SupportAssist solves the problem.

@Outlaw Wales :

Just an FYI that I uninstalled all SupportAssist-related software from my Inspiron 5584 since my last post in this thread (see the 22-Mar-2023 post in my topic Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update Rolled Back to v5.5.4.16189) so I'm no longer seeing these "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events logged in my Reliability Monitor whenever Dell SupportAssist Remediation (a.k.a. Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery / System Repair) creates a system snapshot in the hidden C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair folder.

I would be pleasantly surprised if @DELL-Cares responds to your request for an update about this bug, so if you haven't already done so you might want to start a support ticket about this bug before your Premium Plus support plan expires. Employee @NikhilKiroula's 01-Jul-2021 reply <here> in this thread explains why these "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events are being generated, but that reply also led me to believe that Dell hasn't even bothered to log a bug report asking the software programmers to re-code Dell SupportAssist Remediation so that it queries the "lighter" Win32reg_AddRemovePrograms class instead of the old Win32_Product class (which in turn calls msiprov.dll to perform the consistency check).

I have noticed the same thing in the Reliability monitor. Googling brought me to this page.

I used the link "Jump to solution" and read there that the solution is to remove Dell support assist.

This issue dates from 2021 and has not yet been resolved???????

Not great publicity for Dell!!!!!

Hi @amazone2 :

The logging of these "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events are actually caused by a program called Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery (also called Dell SupportAssist Remediation or System Repair) and this occurs approx 30 min after boot-up at the same time that Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery creates a Dell system repair point (snapshot) in the hidden folder at C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\.

As I noted in my 02-Jul-2021 post <here> in this thread, these "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events are likely caused by sloppy programming but Dell doesn't seemed inclined to do anything about it.

Logging of these "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events normally doesn't cause a problem on most Dell computers other than a brief period of high CPU activity about 30 min after boot-up.  However, if logging of these events does cause performance issues on your computer you can either uninstall Dell SupportAssist Remediation from Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features or simply turn OFF System Repair in your SupportAssist settings [Options (gear icon) | Settings | System Repair | System Repair is Turned On | DISABLED].  System Repair can also be disabled in the SupportAssist OS Recovery control panel (Control Panel | System and Security | SupportAssist OS Recovery | Settings | System Repair | DISABLED) as shown below.

If you do uninstall or disable Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery you will have to use an alternate method for possible emergency recoveries.  I removed all SupportAssist-related software from my Inspiron 5584 and now use Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.x for checking for available Dell software and driver updates, ePSA (enhanced Pre-boot System Assessment) for Dell hardware diagnostics, and Macrium Reflect Free v8.0 disk imaging software (out of support but still fully functional as of Jan 2024) for creating full disk images and emergency recovery media (e.g., a bootable USB) in case I ever have to perform an emergency recovery of my system.

Hi @Imacri. Sorry for not reacting. I got no notification of your reaction.

The image you are showing me is something I cannot find on my laptop (Dell Inspiron 5770 - Windows 11 23H2) I only have Dell Update and Support Assist.

What I have tried so far is disabling the Dell support Assist Remediation service. That did not solve the problem.

Can I ask you - are you a user or are you someone from Dell helpdesk??

It all started with me seeing a critical error atieclxx.exe.

This has to do with the AMD graphic driver. So I went to the Dell website to look for a new driver.

There I see a lot of critical drivers for my Dell. But I cannot install them because Dell does not support Windows 11 on my laptop!!!

I think I will just uninstall Dell Support Assist.

Hi @amazone2 :

I am a fellow Inspiron user, not a Dell employee.  Also note that Dell switched to Sprinklr as the software provider for this forum platform in August 2023, and since then users have stopped receiving email notifications if a topic they are subscribed to receives a new post.  You must log in to this forum and check your "in-app" notifications (the bell icon in the top-right corner as shown below) in order to see if anyone has replied in a topic you are following.  That bell icon will turn red if you have unread notifications.

... The image you are showing me is something I cannot find on my laptop (Dell Inspiron 5770 - Windows 11 23H2) I only have Dell Update and Support Assist.

What I have tried so far is disabling the Dell support Assist Remediation service. That did not solve the problem....

Please go to Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features and see if you have Dell SupportAssist Remediation v5.5.x (sometimes called Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery) installed on your system.  It is a separate program from Dell SupportAssist v3.x or v4.x, and you should not have a Dell SupportAssist Remediation service listed in Windows Services and should not being seeing the "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events logged in your Windows Reliability Monitor unless Dell SupportAssist Remediation v5.5.x is currently installed on your computer.

I uninstalled all SupportAssist-related software from my Inspiron 5584 in March 2023, including Dell SupportAssist v3.x, Dell SupportAssist Remediation v5.5.x, and the Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update v5.5.x (see my 22-Mar-2023 post in my topic Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update Rolled Back to v5.5.4.16189 for further details).  This is what Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features used to look like on my Win 10 machine on 10-Mar-2023 just before those SupportAssist-related programs were uninstalled (note that my installed programs are sorted by Publisher in the image below) ...

... and before I uninstalled Dell SupportAssist Remediation I could open the SupportAssist OS Recovery settings manager at Control Panel | System and Security | SupportAssist OS Recovery as shown below where I could turn System Repair ON or OFF per my 22-Feb-2024 image <above>.

If that's not what you see It's always possible your Dell SupportAssist Remediaiton v5.5.x installation was corrupted when you upgraded to Win 11.

If you're using an operating system that is not supported by Dell on your Inspiron 5770 that could explain some of the issues you're currently experiencing.  The Dell Inspiron 5570 and 5770 System BIOS v1.14.0 (rel. 08-May-2023) that is currently recommended on the Inspiron 5770 support page at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/inspiron-17-5770-laptop/drivers is not certified for Windows 11 for your computer model so I suspect you're going to continue seeing unexpected problems with Dell utilities like SupportAssist and Dell SupportAssist Remediation as well as your hardware drivers.  Did you check to see if Win 11-compatible drivers for your hardware were available from the original manufacturer (e.g., AMD, Intel, etc.) before you upgraded your OS?

Assuming your Inspiron 5770 shipped with the AMD Radeon 530 graphics card listed on that support page, are you still using the v27.20.20904.4000 driver (rel. 04-Jan-2022) that Dell recommends for 64-bit Win 10 OSs or have you installed a newer driver?

If you aren't sure open the Windows Device Manager and look under Display Adapters.  My Inspiron 5584 did not ship with a discrete graphics card like the AMD Radeon 530 so my system uses the built-in Intel UHD 620 Graphics chip that is integrated on my motherboard, and I'm still using the v27.20.100.9664 driver recommended on the support page for my Inspiron 5584.

I have no experience with AMD Radeon graphics cards so I suggest you post in the Inspiron Laptops board and ask for assistance there to find the correct Win 11-compatible graphics driver for your system so you don't take this thread of DELLKaren's off-topic.

Oh gosh, thanks for all the time you spend in answering my post.

I did find the Dell support assist remediation but I do not find it in the Windows apps where I do find Support Assist and Dell update.

But let's forget this at the moment. I stopped both services.

The main problem I now have is that I cannot update because Dell does not support Windows 11 on my device.

This is the list of critical updates I see:

I contacted Dell support and they sent me  2 drivers:

"Could you please follow these 2 links to update the graphic card drivers : https://dl.dell.com/FOLDER07925689M/3/AMD-Radeon-530-Graphics-Driver_FJPYM_WIN64_27.20.20904.4000_A03_02.EXE

https://dl.dell.com/FOLDER07542603M/3/Intel-UHD-Graphics-Driver_CT15N_WIN_27.20.100.9664_A10_01.EXE

The AMD Radeon driver update failed. The Intel UHD graphics driver seemed to install but it is still in the list of critical updates.

Also I do not seem to have The Dell Inspiron 5570 and 5770 System BIOS v1.14.0 (rel. 08-May-2023)

Meanwhile Dell recommended stopping the AMD External Events Utility. I now get no critical atieclxx.exe errors anymore.

I must say I find it unacceptable that Dell will not support the Windows 11 drivers on my device as it was possible to upgrade it to Windows 11.

Did you check to see if Win 11-compatible drivers for your hardware were available from the original manufacturer (e.g., AMD, Intel, etc.) before you upgraded your OS?

No I did not. I never thought I would have issues.

I did try to download the driver from the AMD website but they answered I had to go to Dell for this.

The Dell helpdesk started by telling me to  reinstall Windows and that means deleting everything from the computer and of course you'll need to backup all your files

I find this very drastic and doubt that it would help.

I could reinstall Windows keeping all the installed programs and my files are on a separate partition but I hate doing this.

Also my big problem is that I use Microsoft money.

I was always able to reinstall it on my newer computers but it does not seem possible anymore now.

This is terrible because I have been using it since more than 20 years.

But let's forget this at the moment. I stopped both services ...

Hi @amazone2 :

Please keep in mind that this topic is about Dell SupportAssist Remediation and the "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events logged in the Windows Reliability Monitor.  If you have questions about finding compatible software and hardware drivers for your Inspiron 5770 now that you have upgraded to Windows 11 (an OS that is not supported by Dell on your computer model) then please start a new topic and I will be happy to assist you there. Before you post in that new topic be aware of the following:

... The main problem I now have is that I cannot update because Dell does not support Windows 11 on my device ....

It's still possible that the latest Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.2.0 listed <here> on the support page for your Inspiron 5770 (Dell-Update-Windows-Universal-Application_GT6WW_WIN_5.2.0_A00.EXE, released 31-Jan-2024) will still run correctly with your Win 11 OS.

If that utility is installed on your computer (check at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features, not Settings | Apps) then ensure the Dell Client Management Service (a shared service required by both SupportAssist v4.x and Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.x) as a Status of "Running" and see if Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.2.0 launches normally.  If it does click the blue Check button to see if it can search for available updates. NOTE: If the check for updates works please DO NOT click the blue Install button to start the download and installation - just report back in your new topic and lets us know what updates, if any, it recommends.

HINT:  If you click System Information link shown below in your Dell Update v5.x app it will show the version numbers of most of the Dell software and hardware drivers currently installed on your system.

... This is the list of critical updates I see...

If you go to the Inspiron 5770 support page at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/inspiron-17-5770-laptop/driver, choose 64-bit Windows 10 for the operating system (which is the closest match you will find for your Win 11 OS), click the This Device tab as shown below and enter your unique Service Tag then you will see a filtered list of the latest installers for Dell software and hardware drivers that are compatible with the hardware components for your Inspiron 5770 computer if you were still using a 64-bit Win 10 OS.

This does not mean that you currently require those updates - you might already have the latest versions installed on your computer .  Utilities like SupportAssist v4.x and Dell Update v5.x will automatically check to see if you have any outdated Dell software or hardware drivers that need to be updated; if you are not using those Dell utilities you will have to determine yourself if your current Dell software and hardware drivers are outdated.

NOTE:  There is no installer for Dell SupportAssist OS Remediation v5.5.x (also know as Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery) listed on the Inspiron 5770 support page <here>.  This is because this emergency recovery software is only offered to compatible Dell computer models when you run a check for updates from SupportAssist v4.x or Dell Update v5.x;  if it is offered by one of those utilities it will be installed as a bundle of apps called the Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.5.x.

... I do not seem to have The Dell Inspiron 5570 and 5770 System BIOS v1.14.0 (rel. 08-May-2023) ...

When you start your new topic be sure to tell us the BIOS version you currently have.  The more information you can provide about the Dell software and hardware drivers  that are currently installed (e.g., program names, version numbers, error messages or warnings you see at launch) the easier it will be for others to troubleshoot your problems.

...  Also my big problem is that I use Microsoft money. I was always able to reinstall it on my newer computers but it does not seem possible anymore now. This is terrible because I have been using it since more than 20 years.

My old Vista SP2 machine shipped from the factory with Microsoft Money Plus and I still use Microsoft Money Sunset Plus (offered for free by Microsoft to replace expired versions of Money Plus, Money Plus Deluxe, etc.) on my Win 10 machine.  This "sunset" edition is backward compatible with most older version of Microsoft Money and imported the .mny file I created on my Vista SP2 machine without a problem.  I haven't tested this "sunset" edition on Win 11 yet, but see my 22-May-2022 post # 2448246 in Susan Bradley's Ewaste or usable – week 3 in the AskWoody forum for hints on running this software on computers with newer operating systems.

... The Dell helpdesk started by telling me to  reinstall Windows and that means deleting everything from the computer and of course you'll need to backup all your files

I find this very drastic and doubt that it would help....

That is drastic but I agree a clean reinstall of Windows 11 it might be the most sensible option for you, given that Dell does not support Inspiron 5770 computers that have been upgraded to Windows 11.  However, that's something we can discuss further once you create your own topic.

Please keep in mind that this topic is about Dell SupportAssist Remediation and the "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events logged in the Windows Reliability Monitor.

Yes indeed. What I did these last days:
I decided to do a Windows 11 re-install keeping all my apps. My Microsoft Money is still working so that's OK.
However the Successful Application Reconfiguration items returned.

So now I disabled the Dell SupportAssist Remediation Service and set the Dell Support Assist service to manual.

Will have to see if they return. Will come back here if that is the case.

It's still possible that the latest Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.2.0 listed <here> on the support page for your Inspiron 5770 (Dell-Update-Windows-Universal-Application_GT6WW_WIN_5.2.0_A00.EXE, released 31-Jan-2024) will still run correctly with your Win 11 OS..

Yes it does. In fact I have problems with Dell support Assist since around july 2023 (update 5.5.7.18773 I think) Since then I have been using Dell Update to update drivers.

I have retried now and then to use Dell support assist hoping that the problems would stop with a newer version but they didn't.

So I will stop using Dell support assist altogether.

As you said somewhere before here - Dell does not seem to care.

I will start a new post for the problem of the drivers. However I would already like to mention here:

Thanks to your hint I found system information and I do seem to have the Bios 1.14.0 driver although it is mentioned in critical updates !???

See: https://www.dell.com/community/en/conversations/inspiron/dell-inspiron-17-5000-series-5770-no-driver-updates-windows-11/65eda0bf6f77eb5fca2451ca

About Microsoft Money:

First of all as long as I can use it on this laptop I am OK.

But what if I have to replace it? As said whereas I was always able to install Microsoft Money on new laptops, this does not seem to work anymore. I tried it on an older Dell Windows 10 laptop and it did not work anymore. It seems that this is because Microsoft changed something some time ago.

On the old laptop I already tried some replacements. Gnu Cash and also Microsoft Money plus.

With the Money plus I cannot open the mny file from my Microsoft Money 2001.

I get this error message:

Money can't open the file because it was created using an older version of money.

I am still trying to find a solution - but as said it is not urgent.

Hi @amazone2 :

Thank you for starting your own topic in the Inspiron laptop board at Dell Inspiron 17 5000 series – 5770 No driver updates Windows 11.  I posted there today to try to address some of your questions that are not related to Dell SupportAssist Remediation and the "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events being discussed in this thread.

When I removed all SupportAssist-related software from my Inspiron 5584 in March 2023 I had Dell SupportAssist v3.13.2.14 and Dell SupportAssist Remediation v5.5.5.16458 (also called Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery) installed on my system - see the second image in my 03-Mar-2024 post <above> that I captured in March 2023 from Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features.  SupportAssist and Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery are two different programs and have different version numbers.

If I recall correctly, setting the Startup Type of Dell SupportAssist Remediation service to DISABLED in your Windows Services should prevent Dell SupportAssist Remediation from launching boot-up and stop the "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events from being logged in your Windows Reliability Monitor. Have you installed alternate emergency recovery software (e.g., disk imaging software from Macrium Reflect, Acronis, etc.) or made other plans in case you ever have to perform an emergency recovery of your system?

If you don't want to uninstall SupportAssist but don't plan on using this software in the next while I'd suggest you set the Startup Type of both the Dell SupportAssist and Dell TechHub services to DISABLED as shown in the old image below I captured in December 2022.   The Dell Data Vault (DDV) services also part of Dell SupportAssist but they use little to no RAM or CPU as long as the Dell SupportAssist and Dell TechHub services are DISABLED.

Do NOT disable the Dell Client Management Service.  If this service is not running your Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.x utility will not function correctly.

what do i do several hundred a day it started on the 29th of april when i updated support assist ...

Hi @Laurent1717 :

When you go to Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features do you see a program named Dell SupportAssist Remediation in your list of installed programs, and if so what is the current version number and "Installed On" date?

I no longer have any SupportAssist-related software installed on my Inspiron 5584, but as far as I know these "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events are logged in the Reliability Monitor (and Windows Event Viewer) about 30 minutes after each system restart when Dell SupportAssist Remediation (also known as Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery or System Repair) creates a Dell system repair point in the hidden C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair folder .

As far as I know the only way to stop these "Information Only" events from being logged is to uninstall Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery or disable System Repair.  Just be warned, however, that if you do so this means that Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery will not be able to perform an emergency recovery if your system becomes unstable and/or will not boot up, and you will have to install other software (e.g., disk imaging software like Macrium Reflect Free, EaseUS Todo Backup Free, etc. - see the 28-Jun-202 Tech Republic article Top 5 Free & Reliable Hard Disk Drive Cloning Software for other suggestions) to replace its functionality.

See my 22-Feb-2023 post <above> for instructions on how to turn off System Repair from the Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery settings manager. You can also turn off System Repair in SupportAssist - here's an old image I captured in February 2023 when I was still using  SupportAssist v3.13.2.  NOTE: If you have SupportAssist v4.0.x  see the instructions in the SupportAssist for Home PCs v4 User’s Guide.

To test if Dell SupportAssist Remediation v5.x is (or isn't) responsible for your "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events turn OFF System Repair in your SupportAssist settings, re-boot your computer, and monitor your Reliability Monitor for a few days (WARNING - this will delete all Dell system repair points in the hidden C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair folder and prevent creation of any new repair points until System Repair is turned back on).  If your "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events stop being logged ~30 minutes after each system restart then you can be confident that Dell SupportAssist Remediation v5.x was the cause, and you can then decide if you want to turn System Repair back ON or install disk imaging software to manage any future emergency recovery.

LATE EDIT:

You might also need to DISABLE the Dell SupportAssist Remediation service in your Windows Services and restarting your computer to ensure that Dell SupportAssist Remediation cannot load into memory while you are running your test.  See my 04-May-2024 post <below>.

Keep in mind that these "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events are logged for "Information Only" and are not errors.  If logging is not causing a real problem (e.g., if the excessive CPU activity does not freeze your computer or cause your CPU to overheat) then these events are just an annoyance and can be safely ignored.

Alienware support assist Remediation 5.510.19019

support assist 4.0.3 started when i udated to this version

Hi @Laurent1717 :

What is the full model number of your Dell computer (e.g., Alienware x16 R2, Alienware m16 R1). I can't find an exact match if I enter "alienware r16" at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/products.  NOTE:  If you enter your unique (private) Service Tag at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/products this should re-direct you to the correct support page for your Dell computer model.

Could you also confirm the version number and installation date of your Dell SupportAssist Remediation v5.x software (e.g., do you mean v5.5.10.19019 instead of v5.510.19019). When I uninstalled Dell SupportAssist Remediation (also known as Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery) from my Inspiron 5584 back in March 2023 I was using v5.5.5.16458.

It's possible that the installation of SupportAssist v4.0.3 on 29-Apr-2024 triggered a check for Dell software and driver updates that installed Dell SupportAssist Remediation v5.x on your system.  Check your SupportAssist history for the past month for an update called "Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools" on the History page of your SupportAssist interface (see the "History" section of the SupportAssist v4.0 User Guide for details).  It is also possible that Dell SupportAssist Remediation v5.x was installed on your system prior to 29-Apr-2024 but that your System Repair setting was disabled in SupportAssist, and that System Repair (another name for Dell SupportAssist Remediation) was automatically enabled in your SupportAssist settings on 29-Apr-2024 when SupportAssist updated to v4.0.3 (see the "Configure System Repair Settings" section of the SupportAssist v4.0 User Guide for details).

The easiest way confirm that Dell SupportAssist Remediation v5.x is (or isn't) responsible for your "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events is to temporarily DISABLE System Repair in your SupportAssist settings.  You might also need temporarily  DISABLE the Dell SupportAssist Remediation service in your Windows Services and restart your computer to ensure that Dell SupportAssist Remediation cannot load into memory while you are running your test.  Post back if you require assistance disabling this service.

...  To test if Dell SupportAssist Remediation v5.x is (or isn't) responsible for your "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events turn OFF System Repair in your SupportAssist settings, re-boot your computer, and monitor your Reliability Monitor for a few days... If your "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events stop being logged ~30 minutes after each system restart then you can be confident that Dell SupportAssist Remediation v5.x was the cause, and you can then decide if you want to turn System Repair back ON or install disk imaging software to manage any future emergency recovery..

Hi @Laurent1717 :

Sorry, this is an old topic, and I just remembered that at one point simply turning OFF System Repair in my SupportAssist settings wasn't enough to stop the logging of "Successful Application Reconfiguration" events in my Reliability Monitor.  I had to go one step further and change the Startup Type of the Dell SupportAssist Remediation service from "Automatic (Delayed Start)" to DISABLED in my Windows Services and restart my computer to prevent Dell SupportAssist Remediation from launching boot-up.  Here's an old image I captured in Feb 2023 when Dell SupportAssist Remediation v5.5.5.16206 was installed on my Inspiron 5584:

Post back if you need help disabling the Dell SupportAssist Remediation service.
