Data erasure ...

I noticed the new release notes on Powerlink for the new 5772 Enginuity code.
One of the good features is the Certified Data Erasure. However, if you think about it, if you don't have this code, every time a disk is replaced, your data is walking out the door. If the disks that are just marginal and get recycled then could your data end up in someone else's storage array? Are there plans to roll this out to the other Symmetrix lines?

There does seem to be some confusion on this and there are several erasure options.

EMC Certified Data Erasure at the array level:  You are decommissioning or shipping an array out and want all data removed with a document provided by EMC stating so.

EMC data erasure appliance:  EMC can place a data erasure appliance at your site for failed disk drives which will erase them.  EMC provides documentation stating that the drives have been erased.

EMC Solutions Enabler Symmetrix Secure Erase via CLI:  This is interesting as I was able to find a CLI guide for it related to solutions enabler 6.0.  I am unable to find the command on any of my CLI machines which are running 6.5.2.  This tool is designed to allow erasure of logical devices via a solutions enabler command symerase.

support for symerase was dropped back in 6.02, it would be nice to have that functionality for non-certified erasures.

Interesting.

What about secure erase?  I thought that is supposed to be another method of erasure via CLI.  I am under the impression that you get it for free but does not provide a certificate unless you purchase a license.

My client is isterested in the Certified Data Erasure Service and needs the certificate generated. Their question is, is that report available in other than PDF format. For their compliance needs, the need to enter the drive serial numbers into one of their online systems. Copy and paste from 20 PDF pages would be a bit tedious. Can the report be generated in plain text also, or even a CSV format?

Thanks.

Hello Kenbaer,

I have asked and the only format available is PDF. They are using PDF because it has to be a legal document that cannot be modified.

That is why they are using PDF. I hope that helps you.

Thank you.
