Host Based versus Array Based Symmetrix Replication
Hi all..new to the site and looking for some expert opinions.
Was speaking with a colleague who has a customer suffering performance issues (high reponse times) for their applications. Some apps are getting good IOPS and response time. However one particular app has very poor performance.
One reason they are investigating is related to the fact that they are using Host Based replication and not Array based. I understand some of the caveats related to Host based replication is the additional processing time on the Hosts resources. This is why Array based is advised.
Main reason for using host based replication is ability to access remote mirror faster (not sure if SRDF is or could make the mirror available faster)
I also believe that this might not be the only reason for the poor performance - it could be a number of things (drive types, speed) and methods to try and improve this (FAST etc)
I would like to put a list together discussing the pro's and con's of Host Based versus Array Based and would appreicate some input from the community.
Details on environment are sketchy - VMAX, distance between arrays is minimal (same DC), 10k drives, SQL DB. No info on software but can request this.
BR
Steve
