Dell PE R210 iDRAC6 Firmware Upgrade - Fans still Noisy

I just installed the latest iDRAC6 firmware (1.50 A02) upgrade for a Dell PE R210 in a hope to reduce the noise levels of the fans as per the BMC fixes (1.50 A04) but the fans are still running fairly high.

With the previous iDRAC6 firmware (1.30) the fans would run at 8500 rpm way too loud and even changing the BIOS power settings made no difference. Now with this release the fan speeds went down initially to around 6500 rpm and are now about 7020 - 7200 rpm. I have changed the power settings for minimum but this has not really made a lot of difference. Does anyone know of how to get the fan speed down further to say 4000 - 5000 rpm? I know the internal components have to be cooled but even the Dell PE R610 which has more fans and components runs more silently.

The server does have the PERC H200 adaptor card installed along with the iDRAC6 Enterprise card and two hard drives and the board temperature is around 28 - 30 Centigrade.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello, Simon.

Thanks again for your reply.  I purchased a different set of 40mm fans for my R210 and "low and behold" their 3-pin connectors do not connect to the Dell 4-pin connector on the system board.  Can you please also help with how you modified the fans you purchased to connect to the system board successfully.  I'm at my wit's end with this server!!!!  And maybe you could include pictures?  Any help would be appreciated.

The Dell fan uses a 4-pin industry standard connector with four wires:

  • Yellow: Tacho
  • Red: +
  • Black: GND
  • Blue: PWM
You 3-pin fan doesn't have a PWM wire, so it'll run at full speed all the time. But that's no problem since it's likely that it's way quieter than the Dell jet engine.
To connect your new fans to the R210 board just cut off the existing 3-pin connector from your fan and fit a 4-pin connector. A friend lent me his equipment and some connectors. Dell uses this one  http://www.molex.com/molex/products/datasheet.jsp?part=active/0050579404_CRIMP_HOUSINGS.xml but there are many others ( http://www.molex.com/molex/products/datasheet.jsp?part=active/0050579004_CRIMP_HOUSINGS.xml for example) that do the job too.
If you don't have the proper material, you can also cut the cable off your Dell fan and rewire it to your 3-pin fan. Connect red-red, yellow-yellow, black-black, leave blue unconnected. If you need help with crimping, have a look at this  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2R38e4XVhLo (just use smaller tools).
When you're done with the cabling, just remove four rubber pins from your Dell fan and plug them into your 3-pin fan. That's it.

Same happens to us. R420.  Windows 2012 Server.

Fans spin up at the Windows splash screen.

It started to occur after we put a SAS HBA card in.

If card is removed - everything is back to normal...

Drivers?
