Hi nanabarb,

I'm sorry to hear about your bad news, and I wish you all the best in these coming months and for the future.

There is no reason what so ever for you to apologize, you take your time and do not worry about any of this computer stuff. It really is understandable that this is the least of your worries.

If you have someone that is willing to take over these issues for you then that is fine. I am more than happy to have them take over this thread for you.

Just tell them to post a fresh HiJackThis log to THIS thread and I will continue with them, there is no need to start a fresh topic, we can continue here.

If there is no-one to take over, then that is also fine and it is no problem for this topic to go stale and then be reopened whenever you are ready.

I'm sure I speak for all the Security Analyst's when I say "Get Well Soon, and may your recovery be a speedy one"

Kind Regards and best Wishes,

K27.

Thanks for your kind note.  I do appreciate it.  I am not feeling good this week so far but wanted to ask you a question.  Yesterday and today I got a notice from AVG for a special offer to upgrade.  I have the free AVG anti-virus program and don't know if it would be worth it to upgrade.  There are 2 different price levels and I wondered if you wouldn't mind going to AVG.com and look at what they are offering.  If you do this and you think it would worth me purchasing the extra protection, let me know and also which offer to take.  I really would appreciate that.  Have a good day!

Hi,

Please provide a link to the offers page that they are offering. AVG.com only takes me to there home page and as such it is impossible for me to know what deals they may be doing.

I will be more then happy to advise whether the added benefits of the paid versions out weigh the added cost's.

As an added note, I strongly suggest that you do not use the infected machine until you can get it cleaned. Even something as simple as upgrading your Anti-Virus program can cause all sorts of problems if there is still malware lurking on the system.

Thanks.

Hi,

The extra features of the paid versions are no way near enough to warrent that sort of money.

For a start the registry cleaner and Tune up features are something to stay away from. So called Registry Cleaners do more harm than good and we can tune up your system once you are well enough.

The Anti-Rootkit feature is built in to other free Anti-Virus program and as such you may want to switch to one of them if you want Rootkit protection.

As for the Firewall feature, there are some very good free Firewalls out there that will do just as good a job, if not better.

I suggest you take a look at this WIKI page.

Thanks for the advice not to purchase the offer of AVG.  I thought I had a firewall on the computer at the present time although I wouldn't know what to look for to see if there is one.  Also I notice this morning something on the IE Page Error that comes up every time the computer is turned on.  It apparently has been there all the time but I just never noticed it.   On the very top of the page in the blue shaded area on the left side it said ATT or AT&T Redirector.  Does that tell you anything that might be happening to the computer or causing the page to come up.  AT&T is our server.  Again thanks for all your help, suggestions and patience with me.  I may call a neighbor is computer savvy  to come over and proceed with what you have suggested.  Only wish there was an easier way.

Hi nanabarb,

Your Welcome.

As I'm sure you will understand, all these errors and problems could be related to a number of things, until we have removed any infections on the system it would be futile to try and troubleshoot any other problems you may be having.

Once someone is available to take over for you we will get everything sorted out, but until then there is little that can really be done without running tools and checking logs.

Let me know when you have some one to take over and we will continue.

Thanks.

Finally getting back to you.  A friend came over (he builds his own computer, etc.) and checked out the computer.  He said that the computer has many  problems and needed a lot of cleaning up and out.  He also said the computer needs more memory.  So in order to get the computer in good working order and more memory I am going to take it to the store where we bought it and let their technicians work on it.  If it was a simple problem, I would try to do it or the friend would try to do it but since there are many problems with the computer, I feel it best  to do it that way.  I do want you to know how very much I appreciate your time, effort, etc.  in trying to help me  and  you have been very patient with me.  I wish you the best and again thank you for all your help.
