Norton systemworks/anti virus 2006 - Install Help

I had problems uninstalling Nortin Internet Security 2005 in the past and used the following tool from symantec:

Symantec Tool

It removed the program successfully.

Please ensure you read the instructions from symantec, and print them out as advised. As I have not used Systemworks on my own system I am not sure if this tool will work. It might be worth ensuring you have backed-up all your important data before using, and that you have a method of restoring your system if things 'go wrong'.

The page does say this:

"The Norton uninstall tool uninstalls ALL Norton 2004/2005/2006 products from your computer. It also uninstalls Norton Ghost 10.0/9.0/2003."

So I would assume if your program is within those dates it will work. You must use the Internet Explorer browser as the tool uses ActiveX controls.

I'm not much help except to offer sympathy and report that I worked for four days--and nights--to get Norton SystemWorks installed.  I thought, by the way, my version included Virus Protection, but now that it is finally installed, I find that it does not.  Now I have to buy Virus separately.  I had to uninstall my Norton, which was on my computer, before I could install the new.  Everything was out of order and awkward in the sequence.  Norton should state, up front, that the current version has to be uninstalled.  I kept running into walls in a maze.  Warning: Now that I have SystemWorks installed, Microsoft is closing Windows Explorer.  Window says to get compatible version of the program (Windows Explorer) from the softwarepublisher.  I can't find site for info on this on Microsoft.  Microsoft just directs me to Dell, which won't talk to me (including email) without a charge.  Yes, there has to be a better way!  Wish I knew how to direct you out of your problem!  Just want you to know you are not alone in your frustration.

Thanks fogleg, it worked.  I will name my first scan after you ; )  I deleted everything that had to do with Norton. 

Unfortunately, that did not solve the problem of installing SystemWorks.  I did EVERYTHING it told me to, turn off this, turn of that!  After many hours of frustration of install failures it finally tells you to read the readme.txt from the disk.  Blah, blah, blah the bottom line is "GOBACK" for the most part is NOT compatible with XP!!!  Now why can't they tell you this when the "prescan" is run.  This is suppose to check your system to see IF THERE ARE ANYTHING that would hinder the installation.

Stupid, stupid.  I installed SystemWorks without "GOBACK" and it worked!!! 

There is NOTHING in the user guide that is useful.  It gives you the barest of instructions. 

I have a year to find another product!!! 

Heidishane, Yes we share the pain and  I think it is all very un-necessary!!  Unfortunately, you will have to hunt around the Symantec site to find an answer to your Windows Explorer problem.  I saw it somewhere in there.  Good-luck!!!

 

This is an up-date.  Having spent countless hours trying to install/uninstall and working out bugs, I have given up.  I have uninstalled both Norton SystemWorks and Norton Internet Security completely and have also filed for a refund.  

TAKE MY ADVICE DON'T BOTHER WITH NORTON!!!!  IT'S NOT WORTH THE EFFORT.

I run Norton Internet Security 2006, with no problems on XP - but I do Have 1.5 GB of RAM. Norton is a huge resource hog, but IMHO it gives me very good security, I have not been infected for 3 years. I have also run NIS 2005 with no problems too. Without knowing the setup of your system I can only guess the SystemWorks package is giving you trouble, and as I have never used this I have no knowledge of it I'm afraid.

If you've had enough of Norton that's fair enough, hope you get a full refund. Maybe you'd like to try some different packages.

For a suite, like Norton, you could try:

Kaspersky Antivirus

I havn't used it myself, but I have been told it is a very good package. It also uses a fair amount of system resources.
If you prefer to go the free route then I can recommend these two firewalls, which I have used myself:

Sunbelt Kerio Firewall
Zonealarm firewall

Both are very good, and fully supported. Zonealarm basic is the free one, and sunbelt's gives you a 30 day trial of the full package, then it switches to basic security and it is also free. Please be aware these are firewalls only, and are designed to stop attempts to hack into your computer, they are not anti-virus software. However the following are, and again are free:

Avast anti-virus
AVG Free anti-virus

I have used both, they are reliable, and give good protection whilst using a small amount of Windows resources. There are pay-for versions, IMHO they do not give you any extra security - just more options like ad-blockers etc.

My personal recommendation is to use a firewall, anti-virus and anti-malware software at the very least. One firewall, and one anti-virus program is more than enough. If you use two of the same type of program they may conflict and subsequently reduce your protection. In addition to these programs I also recommend the following, which can be used at the same time with no conflicts, to help remove malware (spyware, trojans, data miners etc):

Ewido Anti-Malware
Adaware SE Personal Choose a mirror from the right of the page.
Spybot S&D

These programs are used for weekly scans, you have to update and scan manually, but it is only a few clicks of the mouse. Hope this post isn't too long, and all the opinions are my own and come from my own personnal experience.

One final note, perhaps you might try Norton Internet Security on its own, without the systemworks - it may work.

I sorry you had a bad experience with Norton, but Trend Micro is a very well thought of program. I hope you have more luck with it!

I guess I must be fortunate in that I have had no problems, apart from the initial uninstall of 2005 when up-grading to 2006.

One think you may want to ensure after removing Norton with the tool is doing an explorer search for the Norton folder in C:\Program Files. Once found you may wish to remove it manually, as it will no longer be needed. Just ensure you have back-ups of your important information, in case things go wrong.

As I said before I'm pretty sure it was Systemworks that was the problem, anyway best of luck and safe surfing.

Thanks Foglegs!!!  I just installed the Trend Micro Internet Security 2006.  No problem with the install.  I did learn from the Norton set-up to close everything that wasn't necessary.  That was all.  It was a breeze. 

So far, so good - I'm impressed with it.  It gets a thumbs-up from me.
