Windows defender not working since new installation of mcafee!

Hi Guys,

I have a window which comes up after boot up on my new Inspiron 1525. My mcafee 30 days were up so I purchased a new subscription, but now whenever the machine starts up it comes up with a message saying that windows defender cant start and some code!!! it tells me to start it manually (which it wont) or reboot (have tried that numerous times already)

Can anyone help me with this issue please?

Is it something that needs switching off in the new mcafee? I cannot start the defender programme or I would uninstall it and just rely on the mcafee.

Any help gratefully received

Regards

Jon

Hi, thanks guy's and thank you Joe.

Contacted McAfee and they got me sorted.

Uninstalled the McAfee software, then switched off Windows Defender. Then a quick re-install of the McAfee security Center and now all okay again.

Once again I thank you all for you help and advice.

Best Regards

Jon

Hi Jon, and welcome to the forum:

Could you post the exact text of the message you are receiving regarding WD at startup?

You don't state which version of McAfee you are using, and whether it is a standalone AV or a suite. There are reports that the McAfee Security Center suite are incompatible with WD, and other security products:

A fresh install of McAfee apparently disables WD:

Hi,

Thanks for getting back to me so quick :-)

The text is as follows :

Application failed to initialize:0x800106ba. A problem caused this program's service to stop. To start the service, restart your computer or search Help and Support for how to start a service  manually.

I renewed the McAfee security Center software on Friday and only found out the proble tonight when I booted it up!

It came with a 30day trial version of the same McAfee security center software, so I thought it was best to stick with what was already on it!

(treat me gently I am a computer novice!!!)

Regards

The following link might help:

I'm not sure this will work for you, since McAfee Security Center seems to dislike Windows Defender. McAfee Security Center includes its own anti-spyware module, and running WD (another anti-spyware program) simultaneously seems to cause conflicts. I have tried many anti-spyware programs, and always keep returning to WD. I think it an excellent product.

To be honest, I am not a fan of McAfee products, nor of security suites in general. See my thoughts on suites here:
http://naut.homestead.com/files/Free/free4.html#What%20about%20Security%20Suites?

Since you have a trial version of McAfee Security Center (which is a security suite), and presumably have not yet paid for it, my advice would be to uninstall it, and download a better standalone AntiVirus. This is not a trivial process.
- First you should download the installer for the new AV. See my recommendations for good free and paid AVs here:
http://naut.homestead.com/files/Free/free1.html#Anti-Virus
- Uninstall McAfee Security Center via your Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs
- Download and run the McAfee uninstall tool. Full instructions here (avoid step 3):
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?lc=1033&id=TS100507
- Restart your system
- Install your AV of choice, by clicking on the AV installer you previously downloaded.

If you wish to stay with McAfee, then I would suggest you post your problems to their support forums here:

Best of luck!
