Cannot Install Windows 7

Greetings Friends,

I had hoped to upgrade to Win 7 from the XP Home I had been happily running for many years on my Dell Dimension 4600i.

When I bought the Win 7 program it came with the Install disc and a Dell "Upgrade Assistant" DVD.  The seller attached a slip saying I should not use the latter.

However, I ran it today because after several attempts I could not get anywhere with Win 7 {it will not install ("Setup cannot find a location to store temporary installation files.  Error Code 0x80070490")} on the PC; it says my  Dimension 4600i is not upgradable to Win 7.  That conflicts with the results, before Win 7 purchase, with Microsoft's "Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor", which I ran while contemplating purchase; it said I could use Windows 7.

However, the Dell Upgrade Assistant also says "...a clean version of Windows 7 can be installed on your system."  Does anyone conversant with this matter know if that means I could Format the C:/ drive, taking everything off it, and then successfully install Win 7?

I thank you sincerely for any consideration.  It is a real disappointment not to be able to us Windows 7 on my PC, which has served us superbly.

Respectfully,

Russ

The 4600/4600i makes a poor candidate for upgrading to Windows 7 (or Vista).  Dell DOES NOT support Vista or Windows 7 on this model and thus some hardware devices, especially the audio will not work.  How much memory (RAM) do you have?  You need at least 2GB of RAM for Win 7.   The Microsoft "minimum system requirements" are not real world accurate and can be misleading.  With the "i" model with internal video it most likely does not have the resolution to run the "Vista" Aero video options withing Windows 7.

If you want Windows 7, the best option is to buy a new system that has modern hardware that is compatible with Windows 7.  The 4600i's "old technology" although may be made to marginally work really is not up to modern software needs and hardware and standards.

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but I am being straight and truthful.

Thank you very, very much for having taken your time to aid me.  I had rather expected as much.  At least the Win 7 installed painlessly on my laptop, replacing Vista, so I have that to enjoy.  Now it seems that in any event the OEM DVD would not have made it on to a second machine.  All Best, Russ
