How to turn the narrator off

Which specific laptop model do you have Trudie, and what OS/version are you using - i.e. Vista Home Premium 32bit/Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit?

It's possible that the reason you haven't had any suggestions yet, might be because nobody is quite sure what you mean by "the narrator"?

It sounds like you're now hearing something you shouldn't be hearing, but you'll need to explain exactly what it (the "narrator") is, before we can offer suggestions on how to try fixing the problem?

This absolutely drove me nuts in XP, Vista and Win 7! Help has the answer to turning it off and on, although it's not very direct. Go to Help, type in Narrator, select the first option--hear text read aloud ..or whatever-- use the link to get to Narrator and remove the checkmarks from everything. It still keeps reading everything while you are exiting, but it should turn it off. Make sure there is no link in Programs, Startup or it will load every time you start Windows.

You can also get to narrator thru control panel, ease of access, control visual display.

It's a Windows feature that can read text out loud   It's part of the "Ease of Access Center" along with a magnifier, speech recognition, etc.  (in XP it was called Accessibility Options)     More below for Win7:

It's in the Control Panel under Ease of Access - the settings controlling the narrator should be adjustable  under  either Narrator or "Use the computer without a display".
