Modem COM port conflict

I am running Windows XP Home on my Dell Dimension 3000. Recently my hard drive quit (in the middle of a backup!), and Dell sent a tech out to replace it. After reloading Windows, he said that the rest was my responsibility and left. Since then, I have been not been able to use my modem, a Conexant D850 56K V.9x DFVc modem.

Using my very limited knowledge, I will try to document error messages and what I have done; hopefully this will be helpful to you.

1. When I try to dial up the Internet, I get "Error connecting to Mindspring. Opening port. Error 633. The modem (or other connecting device) is already in use or is not configured properly."

2. When I run MODEM HELPER, I get a "com port conflict detected." It says that I have a software application which is using the modem. I have loaded very little software and have nothing active that should cause a conflict. The error message is “Result Code 67 – COM port conflict.”

3. The Device Manager shows only COM1. In the Control Panel/Phone and Modem Options/Modem/Advanced Settings for COM3, I cannot change to COM1 (in use) or COM2 (the port has been opened by another application.).

4. In Control Panel/Systems/Device Manager/Modems, the message says that the device is working properly. When I try trouble shooting, the message is that the COM port may be disabled. When I go to Device Manager and click on Ports, only COM1 and LPT1 appear.

Thanks for your help. I'm afraid I know just enough to be dangerous.

Do you have a listing in device manager for modem? If so is there like a red X next to it? Right click the modem listed after expanding and highlight the modem and make sure it is not disabled. If this don't work remove the modem and any other modem listed in device manager and then reboot the computer. If it still won't work the removed the modem again and don't reboot. Then allow windows to search for a modem or new hardware and see if it finds it. You may end up have to add com port 2, 3, or 4 to get it working but try to get com3. Don't put the modem on com1 at all. Stay away from com1 for a modem.

I followed your procedure and reinstalled the modem.  It is still on Com 3.  Device Manager shows only 1 COM port:  COM1 (and it is busy).  How do I add another COM port?

Thanks.

Com 3 is a built in port and should already be configured on your system.
Righ click on your modem in Device Manager and go to properties.
a multitabed box should pop up. Look for a tab labled Resources. Click on that tab and report the IRQ that is listed .

I think that what you have is a IRQ conflict where  both Com 1 and Com 3 are sharing the same irq

Follow Davet50 advice as posted which was the next step I was going to suggest also. Should do the trick.

Try to change the IRQ to 4 or 10 maybe. You should be able to sww the available IRQ options and as you select another one it will show if there is a conflict or not.

IRQ = 22

I went to Device Manager/modem/properties/resources and got IRQ=22.  It shows NO CONFLICTS on the device conflict list.  There is no provision for changing the IRQ.

Sorry to be so confusing.

Ok, that's strange. Usually you can uncheck use automatic setting and then you can change it. Do you have a dialup connection? If so look at the settings for that connection and see what comport and IRQ it is setup for.

In the device manager/modem/properties/resources, the USE AUTOMATIC SETTINGS is checked and greyed out; the CHANGE SETTINGS is greyed out.

For COM1, IRQ=4

This is taking more time than it should, and I appreciate your patience.  Perhaps I should chuck this 3-year old machine and buy my wife an e-machine for her limited needs.

Thanks for your help.

I haven't been much help really. It is so much easier for me to do something myself when I can actually see and touch the machine myself. Maybe Davet50 has more advice. But this shouldn't be a problem to fix. Heck, the modem might be bad. Almost sounds like it. Might be worth the cost to grab one off ebay and try that. Also in bios setup sometimes one needs to select the plugNplay setting for the OS and maybe the opposite, if PNP is set to yes for the OS then change it and you might solve this problem. Good luck!

I bit the bullet and invested $25 for a new modem. Eureka! I now have dial up and am in the process of reconnected to my router and cable modem.

Thanks for all your help in trying to pinpoint my problem (s).  The device manager did say that the modem was working correctly, so I didn't think any more about it.

Again, thanks for your help.  Had not it been the bad modem, I believe that you would have solved the problem!

Well, that is great news and thanks for letting us know. After you tried all the things suggested here by me and the other respondent it started to look like a bad modem. I have seen this a lot. What happens is the modem shows as good but would not reset after use leaving the comport open and in use and not available. This is why you got the error message telling you the port was in use by another device. So I am glad you took the chance and again, thanks for letting us know.
