RECENT GENERIC HOST PROCESS ERROR

Install this update to address an issue that may cause a "Generic Host Process" error message to be displayed after you install security update MS05-012, or cause attachment file names not to be displayed in Rich Text e-mail messages.

* Go here and install WindowsXP-KB894391-x86-ENU.exe

lol. i'm glad you posted that. i saw that message pop up on the bottom of my screen and it said "get it" on it . i got paranoid that it was somebody tricking me into responding to it so they could steal info off my computer, so i ignored it.  i know i'm a dummy but with all that paypal and ebay spoofing going on, i am unsure of what is real and what isnt.  you know all that virus stuff and identity theft stuff is very confusing to those of us that are less than computer experts. i can assume any popups i get that say "dell support" at the top are legitimate?

Hmmmmmmm. I already have that one, but thanks for helping others.

The Generic Host Process error (Win32) I keep getting says the problem is with svchost.exe in module version.dll.

I generally won't trust anything unless I locate it myself at the web site it originates from. Although I have used-- or read-- the DELL Alerts before, as rare as that appears as an icon in System Tray (next to Clock).
I just received email purportedly from Microsoft about this particular error and suggesting to get this same update. I checked the email properties (right-click in OE) and it came from "nobody" @ something "red" dot com... so even though I thought red might mean Redmond, Washington I deleted it. AV didn't show anything but had an attachment.
Email doesn't open automatically, must double-click. I play it safe as I can.

I tried the fix but didn't work.  I only get the error message on boot up (Generic host process for win32 services).  I uninstalled Mcafee virus scan and no more error message.  When reinstalled the message is back.  Any idea how to get rid of the message and keep my virus scan?

Is there any idea what causes this?  I read the bulliten and am still uncertain.  I had this error appear on one of my machines but not the other (the update fixed the problem).  I was just curious why it only seems to effect some machines.

Also, once you apply to fix, you will get the error message a final, last time upon your next reset -- you don't think that it didn't work.

I fixed the problem by going to Control Panel, System, Advanced, Performance, Settings, Data Execution Prevention.  Then turn off DEP for all programs and services except those I select, Generic Host Process will appear in the panel, check the box, apply, ok.

Daubie: "Then turn off DEP for all programs and services except those I select, Generic Host Process will appear in the panel, check the box, apply, ok. "

are you sure those are the choices? the choices i see are i can either "turn on DEP for essential programs"   or i can turn "ON" DEP for everything except those i specifically choose. i dont see any where to disable or turn off DEP altogether.

I am experiencing a similar problem, but DEP is preventing me from accessing Control Panel, My Computer it tells me that dep is preventing access to important system files and recomends that I turn it off, but as the user above says it is no help at all.

is there somewhere in the BIOS I can turn it off??  what can I do to sort this out?
