Studio XPS 8100, new graphic card?

Hi all!

Three weeks ago the graphic card stopped working (I guess). The computer is no longer able to boot and gives a 6 bip code error (according to the manual malfunction of the graphic card or of the chip). During the last year I encountered several issues: graphic card's fan unusually noisy, no signal to the monitor after 3-4 hours of gaming (L of Legends), random changes of Windows resolution. So, I am pretty sure that the graphic card stopped working. The graphic card is an AMD Radeon 5770.

Can I substitute it with a Gigabyte Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050?

Thank you to whoever will answer my question and give me advices.

A Studio XPS 8100 is considered old now so today's powerful cards will not run on it. You have to get an older budget model for about $40. You do have a 350w psu and low cost cards can run on that, but since the computer is old, don't spend much on it. Even consider a working used card that matches the one you have now for less than $20. I think your card has a special connector so it might need a matching card. I would use this setback to buy a new computer.

Sorry and thanks for the advice. I'm new to this community.

I can't buy a new desktop computer and, actually, I don't want to. Ok, an XPS 8100 is old, but is it so bad? I think the processor works fine, even if it is old. I have an ASUS Vivobook Pro 15 (2018) and it isn't that faster than the XPS 8100 for surfing the internet, watching Netflix, playing games of 3 or 4 years ago. I have never had problems a part from the HDD and the graphic card. So, I would like to repair it.

Could you be more specific, please? The Nvidia GeForce 1050 has a PCIe 3.0 and a PSU requiriment of 300 W, the dimensions match: Why isn't it good? What should I look for to assess compatibility?

1. Could be many things, including the motherboard. I suggest you verify the machine works first with a spare PCIe video-card from the closet.

2. Should be fine. Newer Nvidia cards seem to work fine in older (non-UEFI) machines, as long as the power-supply can handle it. I see that @speedstep  agrees.

However, I also agree with @Mary G  ... I certainly would not spend much on this old machine. Even if the motherboard (and other major parts) "check good" ... they could die at any time.

Although a 10 year old machine, it's core performance capabilities aren't bad (quad core probably around 3 GHz and PCIe 2.0).  With it's PCIe bandwidth of 2.0 x16, you could run and take advantage of the performance of almost any graphics card, provided the power supply is sufficient.

Assuming your machine has its original 350W PSU, a Gigabyte Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 - which has a stated PSU requirement of 300W - should be fine.

That said, I'd consider saving money with a used card from ebay or somewhere.

A GTX 1050 isn't a waste of money because it can always be carried forward.
AGP and Conventional PCI from 2005 and earlier machines are a waste.

There are even cases of someone putting a 1080TI into an XPS 400 from 2006.

why post lacking what OS this PC runs???????????????????

w10-64bit  below series 5000 cards fail, AMD< AMD tells you that on page 1..

and not on below gtx7xx  cards, fail, nvidia tells you that too, page 1'

so that be first for a fact if running w10;?

there  are 12 makers of cards

and vast sub models of 1050,  vast. types.  short long tall,  low pro, 1,2,3, fans , 3 VRAM sizes and more, endless.and port options , look on newegg.com see that left column there, see all those vast choices? yah..

so 1050 means not much.

sound to me like your old card is overheating,  or no cool air into PC or heat can not escape.

what PSU is there now? (watts)

what does old XPS mean? XPS 8100 later.posted sure.

try new RTC coin cell first,  after all when weak BIOS goes nuts (AC pwer lost), and may lie to you when NUTS,

13 years old no RTC battery ever lasted 13 long hard years,  1st things 1st ,

then reset pc with no AC power connected,  hard reset

and then setup BIOS correctly as it was.

PSU from 300 watts up to 350 are sold. and more aftermarket ATX, no idea me what you have in any PC.

if PC is old

and PC is like w7 (why)

and no cash then buy a cheap used card, any card that runs w7, if w7,

endless vast choices on fleabay.

if w10 say so and if have a huge PSU say so.  every PC desktop can have anything inside, vast options.

13 years old lots of things possible none I can guess.

ever read benchmarkes by real people with same PC< why not?  2700 folks

did.. (no lie newer better PSU did all that, for a fact on many)

now you know we can bury the PC in endless working good card, for sure new PSU.for sure.

what dells says  does not not matter, only TRUTH matters,. ok? click the link and read.

  • Now I will repeat my post here done endless times, ok?
  • it must fit first. as you can see below there is a lot of space and dell does not spec, out SPACE.. !!!
  • the PSU must not be overloaded, (easy to do with 350watt PSU,).upgrades easy,  this.
  • the PSU  needs to be upgraded if you want any card needing more that 75watts and the 2 missing PCU AUX cables too, some do some do not.  look for them ,if you run over 75watt card with AUX plugs.
  • the BIOS must like you card,  if UEFI secure  boot turned on it will not but this PC has no UEFI..2007 PC
  • not cause the PC to over heat.
  • and last nobody on earth tested all 10,000 GPU cards on this one PC, it never happened,, sorry, see my link to truth above, benchmarked.
