XPS 8960, boot from a USB drive?

XPS 8960

XPS 8960

My XPS 8960 has an American Megatrends Aptio Setup BIOS version 1.1.0 and to my horror the boot menu does not allow the user to select which drive to boot from.  Or am I missing something:  here are the alternative boot options:

I would like to specify a Macrium USB flash drive as the boot drive but am not offered this option.

Shut down the PC, plug in the USB driver, power up the PC, and then keep pressing F12 to enter the F12 Boot Menu. Select to boot from the USB from the menu.

A bootable USB drive can be select to boot with F12, one time boot menu.

With the USB drive plugged-in, restart or power on the machine, instantly keep tapping F12 as soon as seeing the Dell logo and one time boot menu screen will display.  Select the USB description on screen and hit Enter key to boot.  If there is no USB selectable on screen, it was not prepared properly for UEFI boot.

There is no USB selectable on screen so looks like it was not prepared properly for UEFI boot.

When I power up with a USB boot drive plugged in and press F12, I get a boot menu that does not include the option of selecting the USB drive... instead I get the following....  on my XPS 8960 that has an AMI Aptio Setup Version 1.1.0  BIOS...

And when I click Boot Option #3 I get a message "Let Windows Select" without giving any choice to the end user.

If your intention is to boot a restore disk created with Macrium Reflect, use this knowledge base to prepare the USB drive.

I'm trying to update my Samsung 990 PRO and I need to boot from the USB DVD and run into the same problem: I'm unable to boot from the DVD drive (purchased from Dell). Is there a work around for this as the above screens shows what I'm seeing too?

OP - were you able to resolve this? I am facing the very same situation.

@Fe2O32K24 I was able to get this to work. I had to plug the USB into the ports on the back of the MOBO specifically the ones with power symbols next to them. Then I also spammed f12 in the boot sequence. It wouldnt come up from the boot menu in bios

Which ports are you referring to?

I have the same problem. I made an Ubuntu boot key using rufus and when I try to boot to it on my laptop (lenovo) it works fine but when I try to boot to it on my dell desktop it doesn't work. This leads me to believe that it's an issue with the bios settings on the Dell PC, not the boot key.
