Installing a second hard drive

I have purchased a Dell XPS 15 9510.  I ordered it with a 2 TB M2 SSD Hard Drive.  I wanted another 2 TB M2 SSD Hard Drive in Slot 2 but that was not an option.  Since I couldn't  have the laptop built with the second hard drive, I ordered a 2 TB N2 SSD Hard Drive from Dell and plan on installing it myself.

Any thoughts or suggestions???

Thanks in advance!

Well, I received my new Dell XPS 15 9510 (actually my daughter's laptop) and have it completely configured.  I added the second hard drive which was very easy.  I was surprised that the existing hard drive was in slot 2.  I installed my 2 TB hard drive in slot 1 and everything worked out fine.

I have her old laptop and the new one siting side by side with the same background picture on both laptops.  It is amazing how much better the new one looks!

I love the laptop!!!!

I would like to thank everyone who commented on this subject.  They were all helpful much appreciated.  Thanks!!!

Should be a very simple install. Just remember after the installation to go to disk management to allocate and format the new drive.

Service manual has the installation procedure.  The second drive needs a bracket that likely won't be present in the system -- if it's not there, you will need to contact Dell Spare Parts to order it.

Carefully check the specs on the drive you ordered -- it's better to get one without the heatsink included.  These are often not easy to remove (and drives with heatsinks are generally designed for desktop systems -- not notebooks, where they won't fit).

I appreciate your reply.  I have studied the service manual and written procedures for myself.  I was looking to see if anyone else has installed a second hard drive and it they had and problems or suggestions.

Thanks.  I have read the service many and it looks to be very helpful.  I saw that the existing hard drive has a heat sink on it.  I have ordered the heat sink for slot 2 from Amazon.

As others have stated, get a drive without a heatsink and using this one: https://www.amazon.com/Second-Heatsink-Thermal-Latitude-Precision/dp/B08M3H1ZHW/

Dock, thanks for the advice!  Funny you should suggest the heatsink on Amazon.  That is the exact heatsink I ordered.  My laptop is actually for my daughter and is supposed to be delivered this Tuesday (March 8, 2022).  I plan to add a post after I have completed the installation.
