XPS 13 9300 and WD19TB linux problem

Hi everyone,

I have some trouble with my Dell XPS 13 9300 and the WD19TB thunderbolt dock.

At the time I bought the notebook there was no developer editon available here in Germany so
I installed Ubuntu 20.04 myself with dual boot. The notebook itself works like a charm. But the WD19TB keeps troubling me:

- The external monitors work only if they are connected at boot time. Later connecting thunderbolt to the running system does not give me a signal on the external monitors.

- Even if the dock is connected at boot time the external monitors often lose the signal, went black and never come back. Connected USB devices like keyboard and mouse will come back and can be used after some seconds. I need to reboot the system to get my external monitors to work again.

On some days I can use the external monitors for hours without problem, on others I can barley use them at all.

If the monitors disconnect the following message is found in the system log:[drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* CPU pipe B FIFO underrun

I tried the following: Disable Monitor Sleep, Disabling CPU sleep modes, Newer Kernels (5.4.x up to the newest 5.6.x), even other linux distros via live USB. All had the same problem. I also tried a different WD19TB and using the other thunderbolt port on the XPS.

Under Windows there are no such problems, everything works like a charm. But I can't do my work there.

Bios and WD19TB Firmware are the lastest versions available from Dell

Thanks for reading, any help appreciated

Spoiler
For me, WD19TB works without any issues if I connect it to the left TB port on my laptop and use USB-C(TB)->HDMI cable or DP->DP cable to the monitor. Occasional issues arise if I connect it to the right TB port, and lots or all sorts of issues arise if I use HDMI->HDMI cable to connect the monitor (regardless of the laptop port being used). It's a mess But at least there are some combinations that work for me. I have XPS13 9300 with Ubuntu 20.10 kernel 5.8.0

...Nevermind, contrary to my previous post, regardless of which of the two TB ports the dock is connected to, there are issues with dropped/corrupted monitor connections at times...

In my case Dell eventually replaced the dock. There have been no issues with dropped monitor connections so far with the new unit.

I found that setting the Thunderbolt security level to "No Security" in the Bios configuration solved all the issues I was having.

- Ethernet works
- Multiple monitors works
- USB devices work

For some reason, I'm unable to find the security settings in my BIOS.

I'm running 1.4.1 version.

@orduek you say "I'm running 1.4.1 version."

Which one? Unbelievably, there are 2 of them! https://www.dell.com/community/XPS/XPS-13-9300-BIOS-update-1-4-1-new-but-same-version/m-p/7805828#M78815

You can update your BIOS pretty painlessly using fwupdmgr, which may already be installed on your system.

@emapex the two releases of the same version 1.4.1 are DIFFERENT. At the very least, the newer release on 09-Feb-21 includes a fix for Intel Security Advisory INTEL-SA-00455 which was released earlier that same day. There apparently are other component updates as well. Best to comment at https://www.dell.com/community/XPS/XPS-13-9300-BIOS-update-1-4-1-new-but-same-version/m-p/7805828#M78815

I retrieved XPS_13_9300_1.4.1.exe twice.

Once on Dec 10 and again on Feb 12.

Both files are identical.

Each MD5SUM is a45fe28eb5b30189b8de804d71ab3868.

@orduek if you normally use fwupd then it is still trivial. Use this

True.

It is annoying, as the OS doesn't recognize it as new - so now we need to install in manually?

I have the same problem. Monitors are constantly turned off. Can work all day, but then fail for a week's. I would like to put it all together and take it to the trash ... and change the vendor. Sometimes the laptop freezes while turning monitors and dock on and off and only restarting helps. Maybe the Docking Station is faulty and I can replace it under warranty? I also tried to disconnect the HDMI monitor, it did not help.

Notebook works fine without the Docking Station. (By the way, notebook is awesome)

hi @Philipok, I'm using xfce with ubuntu 20.04, Linux 5.8.0-43-generic #49~20.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Fri Feb 5 09:57:56 UTC 2021 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux. It boots fine to the external monitor but after logging in the external monitor doesn't play until I fiddle with the settings / Display. I change the screen dimensions for the laptop and the external monitor until the dock reboots and the external monitor turns on again. Then I don't allow the system to suspend so the screens stay on permanently.
