XPS 15 9560, Shuts down randomly

I have the Dell XPS 15 9560 and I've installed a new motherboard today. The laptop keeps shutting down randomly. Sometimes as soon as an intensive task starts (Unraring, opening 15 chrome tabs all at once, or any task that is demanding.)

It shuts down sometimes after few mins and sometimes after seconds. The shutting down looks normal; I get "Shutting down..." screen and no errors or warnings.

Bios Version is 1.7.0 (even though the latest version on Dell's website is 1.6.2)

I've run Diagnostics (using F12 when the laptop starts) and all tests passed.

Any advice?

This solution worked for me! I ran the stability test before the downgrade and the laptop shut down almost instantly. Then I downgraded the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework driver to 8.2.11000.2996, A04. I then ran the stability test again and the laptop run for 15 minutes on very heavy load without issues.

Hi,

I have the same issue with bios 1.7.0
I think Dell have found a bug in bios 1.7.0 (about Meltdown & spectre patch fix)

You don’t have any solution, you can only try to downgrade to 1.6.2 or wait a new version that will fix this issue.

Thank you Sir for the reply. I appreciate it.

What did you do? Have you tested downgrading? (I just don't like the sound of downgrading. Haven't done that before.)

Downgrade is a risk, i don’t recommand it. And also you may to be exposed to the Intel vulnerability Meltdown & Spectre.

Usually, Dell is fast to patch this kind of issue. You need to be patient.

You can contact Dell to get more information.

Regards,

Edit : After Check on Dell website, the bios downgrade isn’t allowed on XPS 9560.

Thank you gauthi3r

After buying 2 motherboards for this laptop to get it working again, I'll patiently wait for a fix.

Same problem. I bought brand new 9560 about three weeks ago, with 4k screen and i7-7700, try some games and stress testings, all runs great at moment of buying, but about 1 weeks ago I updated all my drivers with latest versions from dell.com, also applied 1.7.0 BIOS path it was available at that time on site (now it's gone), after I run some heavy load game and my laptop shutdowns about after 20-40 minutes of gaming, first 2 or 3 times I think that my win 10 is applies new patches and shutdowns pc, as I played not much, just was interested how it runs on new laptop, I doesn't pay extra attention, but after few days I suddenly noticed that laptop start shutdowns on any heavy load, browser, installing, gaming... And I ran AIDA64 stress test for all system, and after 5-10 seconds of load it shutdowns, just "Shutting down...".

Here is screen of Stress test result afret powerup laptop

I reinstall Windows, reinstall all drivers and downgrade my bios to 1.6.2, after to 1.5.0, but nothing helps, notebook just doesn't take any load, it shutdowns every time I run something heavy.

Please help to fix this problem.

since one week, I have the same problem... very nice dell, the laptop worked fine, but updates have broken it. I got a notification that a new bios was available, I installed it, but I am still experiencing random shutdowns, even under minimum load.

I am about to return the laptop, this is unworkable, and unacceptable for a premium brand

In my case, it might have been the latest nvidia drivers from the nvidia website. I guess these drivers do not do thermal throttling. I had to install these drivers in order to use the latest Visual NSight and CUDA 9. I uninstalled these, ran a stress test, and the system did not reboot. It has to be seen if this was indeed the problem...

Yep getting the same problem when running any games - shutdown within 10-20 minutes. This could be a measure Dell has installed to limit damage to the graphics cards/motherboard, so they don't have to replace any equipment under warranty.

If this is the case, they should design a Laptop they isn't as sensitive to heat and replace all laptops at no cost. I'll be calling dell if it keeps happening and demanding my money back.

I have two XPS 15 9560 both running on Bios 1.7.0 ,both stable. Maybe the problem is temp related? Download:

,run HWiNFO and check the temps.

Start Prime95, start a stress test and watch the temps:

I have the same exact issue: the laptop shuts down after playing 15-20 minutes of very heavy load on the GPU+CPU. Otherwise it's running fine under basic load.

Definitely a heating issue possibly related to some recent update dell made.

This is extremely frustrating.

You can use ThrottleStop to lower voltage and temps. You will also eliminate throttling.

Having the same shutdown issue under load since recent updates. Completely unacceptable for updates to cause these sorts of problems in an essentially new laptop.

I have the same issue. Does any of you know when they're gonna fix? A computer that expensive really shouldn't have these problems.

I found solution for me, just install the oldest version of Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework from here, and all problems has gone.
