XPS 15 9570 external monitor HDMI lagging, flickering and crashing Windows

Hi,

If I use the laptop on its own. No issue.

If I connect the external monitor through a USB-C to HDMI adapter, no issue.

I have been connecting my Samsung 32" UJ590 UHD 4k Monitor through the HDMI port for months and no issue neither.

Since the last 2-3 weeks, I started to get the external monitor to flicker after I reboot my laptop and open Chrome on the external monitor. Sometimes the entire system freeze and I have to do a hard reboot. Sometimes, everything works well for a few hours. Sometimes every app and windows lag when I used them on the external monitor.

I tried everything: windows clean install, re-install all drivers, all windows updates, all dell updates, changing resolution, refresh rate, etc.

Right now, I'm using a USB-C to HDMI adapter and everything works well but it's in 1080p and the adapter doesn't allow me 2K or 4K. FYI, I tried to bring down the resolution to 1080p with the HDMI port but still the same issue.

I noticed the fan is going more crazy than usual even if the laptop is idle but connected to the monitor.

I'm starting to wonder if it's not a hardware issue with my HDMI port?

Anybody has any idea?

Thanks,

Flo

Interesting - I went through the release notes of all previous BIOS updates, and in the release notes for the BIOS 1.12.0 (the BIOS update after the 1.11.2 that worked for @gamez.julian and @JereVicBC ) it says:

"- Fixed the issue that occurs when a 4K external monitor with a TB16 dock flickers intermittently when connected to a system."

My external monitor is 4K and I connect it directly to the laptop's HDMI, and the monitor flickers and goes blank, and the laptop hangs after coming out of sleep or after restarting it. If the solution didn't work for any BIOS above 1.11.2 then maybe the above change was the one that introduced the problem with the external monitor? @DELL-Cares

OMG, my XPS 9570 has been crashing almost every single time when coming out of sleep or hibernation or even when restarting it, but only when an external monitor is attached via HDMI. Without the external monitor there are no issues.
Only with the cold boot can the laptop start normally.
This issue started around Feb-Mar 2020, more or less, and I've had to basically every day long press the power button to force shut down the laptop when starting it, and then turn it on.
The past 9 months has been a total nightmare when it comes to using this laptop!
I just looked, and the BIOS 1.15.0 was released on 14 Jan 2020, which could be the BIOS that caused this problem.
I'll try to reinstall the Windows entirely, and if that doesn't fix the problem I'll revert the BIOS to a lower release, one by one. I'm currently on BIOS 1.16.2.

Just bought my xps 15 and I just realized this issue. I'm returning this. Dell needs to get its act together on this $2k computer.

This is a big deal for me.

Very Disappointed.

Some supplementary information I found out about this today: I can partially reproduce the flickering on my work laptop's monitor itself if I run two instances of the Unreal Shooter Game demo at the same time. When the laptop is under load, sometimes the bottom half of the screen will briefly flicker to garbage before coming back.

I've not observed anything on my personal laptop because a Dell engineer seemed to fix the issue last year. Not sure if this is of help to anyone, but it makes me suspect that the issue is probably driver-related and exacerbated by putting the GPU under heavy load.

My screen flickered when I set the refresh rate at 144hz and was OK at 100hz.i guess that is the limit for  hdmi.

To use a high refresh rate monitor with our 9570 we probably need a usbc to display port adapter.

I have the exact same problem. When I have an external monitor attached, the computer freezes upon reboot. Also, when the laptop is playing video in a browser the external screen oftern flickers and sometimes just goes completely blank and is unusable.

If anyone found a solution please let me know!

hi, check my comment on the first page. Basically, I found no other way to use an old BIOS version. Actually, recently I tried to upgrade it again, just to see if they had fixed the problem, and had to revert everything again as the issue was still there. Funny thing is they said in the 1.13 the bug was fixed but it was not... unbelievable that a machine that costed nearly 2,5k dollars when released, came out with these kind of issues. Reason enough to never buy another Dell again.

Btw, the problem seems to be, in my case, the resolution 4k 60hz. Any other resolution is okay.

I'm having the same issue with my Dell XPS 15 9570.  Tried it with two different HDMI cables and two different external monitors.   It's disgraceful that Dell is ignoring us.   I may try a USB-C to HDMI cable.  Thanks for all the other replies.
