XPS 17 9720, Touchscreen ghost taps?

My laptop warranty expired in May. Lately on the screen, some circles came on randomly on the left as if someone touch the screen. The mouse cursor would move to that circle. Webpages would sometimes go back to the previous screen. At first, it looked like it was a virus attacking my computer.

But I use multiple antivirus software programs, including MS Defender, to scan the computer. It did not find anything. I have completely erased the SSD and either recovered or reinstalled Windows 11 3 times. But the problem still exists. How do I go about for help?

How to Troubleshoot Touch Screen or Touch Panel Issues

There was a previous thread ( https://www.dell.com/community/en/conversations/xps/xps-15-9520-ghost-click-problem/647fa254f4ccf8a8de7cdfd6 ) that discussed the same type of issue where people complained they had to disable the HID Touchscreen when it was plugged in.  I found a way you can leave the touchscreen enabled but prevent the ghost clicks (at least it has worked for me for a few days).  It is a two step process:

  1. Under Windows Services, there are two services called Sensor Monitoring Service and Sensor Service that should be set to disabled.  I'm not 100% sure of their full function but relates to sensors keeping track if you turn the screen sideways but since these laptops are not full flip laptops, this isn't an issue.
  2. Then I think you will have to disable fastboot so it does a full driver reload.  To do this I go to Control Panel (small icons) --> Power Options --> Choose what the power buttons do and on that screen you can uncheck the "Turn on fast startup (recommended)" setting

I think by doing this it bypasses the extra feedback the sensors are picking up from the power supply and from what I can tell the only sacrifice is it automatically switching the orientation of the screen if you turn it sideways which you do manually anyhow.

Hopefully this works for you.

I'm having the same problem. Laptop is a XPS 17 9720. The screen goes crazy and the laptop is totally unusable. I disabled the touchscreen driver in the system settings and the laptop is working but without a touch screen. My wife has the same laptop and hers is working fine (for now).

This is my Dell XPS 9720 - Totally frustrating.... seems vertical in nature. Like a battle of clicks to try and disable HID - then it re enables. Followed Dell trouble shooting.... so frustrated... what is the solution !! Aug24

@NoClueMN Are you still getting ghost taps or did this work long term?  Where do I find the Windows Services/Sensor monitoring services and sensor service options to diable?

I have had the same problem for several years. My "ghost taps" appear in a vertical row on the screen. The system just picks a "row" and randomly taps (sometimes fast, sometimes slow, sometimes it works fine). Started about 12 months after the purchase. I realized that it does this whenever the native laptop screen is turned on. So...Full factory reset didn't fix it. Then thought it might be the NVIDIA driver. Went with the native driver. Didn't fix it either. This is what worked though: I bought a portable monitor and set it up such that the laptop's built in monitor is turned off. At home, I have three monitors: I use my 40" TV as monitor 1, the portable monitor as monitor 2, and I turn off the laptop's native display. Totally stupid workaround, but at least the laptop is now functional. But I paid over $4000 for the laptop so this is quite disappointing. Happy to know that I am not the only one with this issue. Hopefully Dell will take responsibility and offer replacements.

I too am having this issue.  I have been able to determine that it is either a hardware or a bios level issue, as the problem exists in the Dell Bios screens as well as in Windows11.  I am using a Dell WD19 docking station, which should most certainly be compatible.  Like many of you, I paid extra to have the touch screen, so to have it not working through no fault of my own is very frustrating.

So here's my current workaround. I have purchased a portable monitor (17.3", 2.5K) and I use it. I turn off the laptop's monitor and place my portable monitor in front of it. It does the job. But only if I turn off the built in laptop monitor.
