ERROR: <0001> restdata: BackupRead content NOT valid

Getting ERROR: <0001> restdata: BackupRead content NOT valid (see attached log file) I am restoring ~2TB of data to an external drive which is not the source the files were backed up from. Restore destination server is Windows Server 2012 with Avamar client version 6.1.101-87. Majority of the data restores fine but I am getting about 900 of the ERROR: <0001>. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Same situation with Avamar 7.5.1 towards Windows 2012.

Reliable restore feature seems quite crucial for backup software...

The issue in the original post seems to be related to Microsoft Office XML documents. I can't tell if your issue is similar since no log was provided.

If the files in error are Microsoft Office files, try restoring with the following flag configured in the dataset:

--deflateofficexml=false

If the files are from clients that have been migrated from very old systems, you may be encountering the following known issue:

https://support.emc.com/kb/303111

A technical advisory for this issue was released in 2011.

If the affected files are Microsoft Office files created by an application other than Office, hotfix 303273 may help but it was created against Avamar 7.4.101. In this case (or if none of the solutions above help), I recommend contacting support for assistance.

This article gives a plausible root-cause and solution:

https://community.emc.com/docs/DOC-64680

Files created on FAT32 ported to NTFS "ring the bell" during restore.
