Internet shortcuts on Desktop won't work--Solved

Edit: Problem solved by selecting "IE should check to see if it is the default browser" even though it was always the default and no other browser installed. When I next clicked on an Internet shortcut, a message appeared. "IE is not the default browser. Would you like it to the default?" Clicked YES! and problem fixed.

Internet web page shortcuts that are on the Desktop suddenly will not work. Error says: "Windows cannot find http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board?board.id=sw_winxp  Make sure you type it correctly." Then a blank IE page opens and never loads an address. If IE is already open, then they work. File associations for URL, HTML, Internet shortcuts all check out. All other web shortcuts--Favorites, Internet Explorer, links to web pages work. Other non web shortcuts on the Desktop also work. I'm stumped.
