Secondary drive 1 not found during boot up

My Dimension 3000 used to have a DVD drive (drive 0 on Secondary IDE channel) and a DVD-R/W (drive 1 on Secondary IDE channel) drive and worked fine. I accidentally shut down the machine when the DVD drive was reading a file. The next time I boot up BIOS reported Secondary drive 0 not found and Secondary drive 1 not found. After entering Windows XP, device manager showed only the DVD R/W drive. I tested the DVD drive and it appeared to be gone. So I replaced it with a CD-R/W drive (still as drive 0). Now BIOS ketp on reporting Secondary drive 1 not found and I am not able to see the DVD-R/W drive in device manager, only the CD-RW is showing up.

I ran Dell dianostics on boot up. The express test was able to see DVD-R/W on the first run. The subsequent Windows session was able to see both drives. I thought that the problem was fixed and it did not. After I turned off the machine and turned it on again, the same error Secondary drive 1 not found showed up again. Dell dianostics is not able to see the DVD-R/W drive any more. I have tried a bland new calbe and played around with the jumpers with no luck. Any help appreciated.
