Alternative to Ghost

I have a Dell Dimension that was purchased in November...it came installed with Norton Ghost and a built-in backup drive.  Ghost worked great, and then stopped letting me back-up/create recovery points (error:  EC8F1787: cannot create recovery points for job. Recovery points of C:\  error EOBB100B: Cannot lock volume  \\ ?\Volume(a7126482-ef6b-11db-89cc-806d6172696f}\ because it contains the OS or has an active paging file.

I tried EVERYTHING I could find in Symantec on-line help..and wrote to Dell support (unplugged USB devices, turned off programs, turned off paging file, etc.).  Nothing worked.  Dell suggested I wipe out everything and go back to original setting.  Ouch.

Did that and Ghost worked a couple of days and then did the same thing.  I backed up once today, it worked.  Just out of curiosity, I tried it again and got the same error message.  NOTHING changed between the two (in terms of installed software or devices).

I am now ready to give up the Ghost.  Does any other software do the same thing and might be more reliable.  Do I just overwrite the current data on built-in backup?  If I do, will that harm the backup of Dell original system setup?  Thanks for any advice.   Dave
