Internet Intruders
In this evening's mail I received a copy of my provider's Newsletter. It's lead article focuses on the problem of Internet Intruders covertly working their way into your system and delivering all manner of havoc.
The article is a reprint of a PC Magazine article of November 15, 1999, by Sal Ricciardi, contributing editor.
The article describes two ways an intruder can subvert your system. "The FIRST : The perpetrator can take advantage of your leaving The File and Print Sharing turned on in the Network section of Control Panel for your Internet connection, which is rather like leaving your door open and placing your wealth in full view a few feet inside the door. Sure, you can leave File and Print Sharing turned on and password protect your shares if you really want to, but this is like placing a speed bump on the autobahn. The SECOND way your security can be compromised is through a back-door program, such as Back Orifice or Netbus, which installs itself in Trojan horse fashion by arriving as an e-mail attachment..."
The author states that the way to protect your system is - to "...start by turning File and Print Sharing off." "You tell your Browser to accept only signed downloads and you examine the digital certificates of each and every one."
He goes on to say, "Turning off File and Print Sharing while your on the Internet is particularly important. If your using a cable modem, leaving this setting turned on could cause your computer to pop-up as available when someone else on your network segment opens his or her Network Neighborhood icon."
He then goes on to recommend a piece of Software hye has discovered and installed on his personal computer called Black ICE Defender ($39.95 - www.networkice.com) The product detects and informs you of attempts to hack your system.
BlackICE can be considered a personal intrusion-detection, identification and countermeasure system. This item sounds like it can be of great assistance.
Sorry for the extended explanation, but being a writer of sorts myself, the quotations were necessary.
My PROBLEMS are - FIRST: when I went into my Control Panel, I could not locate where or how to turn off File and Print Sharing. SECOND: how does one tell their Browser to accept only....or any other instruction. THIRD: has anyone any familiarity with the Black ICE Defender.
Frankly, even with my limited knowledge, based on the description of what this software is capable of doing I am tempted to purchase and install with haste. At the same time, I would like to follow the suggestion of turning off the File and Print Sharing function as well, but no not how to complete this task or if it is really a proper intervention.
Denny and Dan B. - and whoever else has some input regarding this issue please respond.
