my latitude d800 (3weeks old has been making the same sound since day 1) makes a whizzing sound which last for a second about every third second. It sounds like the hard drive is beeing accessed, Another way to describe the sound, is sounds sort of like the really old phones where you rotaded a numbered disc to dial, the sound you can hear in these phones when the disc rotaded back to its initial position is sort of what this sounds like although it is not as loud and is higher in tone/pitch. I'm not sure what it is but am fairly sure it comes from the left side of the computer.
