What is a partition? (sorry)

I'm not very educated on the "innards" of my computer. And this is my first post by the way- yet I've had this computer for almost 3 years. (shipped Dec. 2002) It's a Dimension 2350. Here's my situation: I would like to know if it is possible to get my computer back to it's original state- the way it was when I pulled it out of the box. I've read the owner's manual about reinstalling Windows XP. Now, from my understanding, there's an option to install a "fresh" copy. Does that "reset" the computer to it's original state? I actually attempted to reinstall Windows, selecting the fresh copy option, following the steps in the manual. Then I got to a section where it asked something like "choose a partition to delete or replace" or something like that. But I got spooked and aborted the whole thing because I didn't know exactly what to do. Hence, my question: What is a partition? I have an idea, after reading some of the posts that contained the word "partition", but I still need some info on this. And one final question (and I hope it's not a dumb one) If I am able to "reset" my computer to it's original state, does that wipe out any viruses, spyware and other junk like that? Or does it keep all that stuff? Please help....
