I am running a Dimension L1000R with an HP CDRW hooked up to one of the IDE cables, and the hard drive hooked into another.

I want to hook up a second hard drive.  Due to location (the 3.5" bay under the CDRW) it would make sense to hook up the new HD to the same cable as the CDRW, setting the CD to slave and HD to master, right? 

Would doing so affect my first hard drive at all? (the first HD being connected to a totally separate cable)
