Help!

I have a Dell Precision490 with Vista and thought nice and easy, I will just reinstall XP. 3 hours later no joy.

When I run the cd it says cannot find hard drive. After trying fdisk and the like, I took the drive out and formatted it using another machine and it still cant find it. Other blogs have said to download the Sata drivers which I did and loaded them at bootup and it blue screened. When i fdisk now it just shows the 10 gb utility partition but nothing else. Can anyone please advise.
