Cooling fan problems

XP crashed a few times. Error report from Microsoft says that the touchpad

is causing XP to become unstable. Now on startup, the fan runs, after I log on, the fan

stops and of course, the laptop overheats and shuts-off. This issue has happened to

be before and I re-formatted and there were no more fan problems. Is there any way around

this without me having to re-format and start from scratch. Is there some sort of file

that possibly got corrupted that controls when the fan starts and stops?

I've even re-flased the BIOS, reloaded the chip sets, drivers etc...

Thnaks.
