Replaced my hard drive - trying to recover data from my old one...

Question

Functionally illiterate on computer hardware, I need help.  Using a Dimension 4550 - how can I hook up my old drive as a slave to recover data?   I see the ribbon cable on my new HD has a connection for another drive that fits the old one, not sure how to go about hooking up to read it.   How about the jumper switches on the back of the old one?  Is there a standard in the industry for settng the switches?  The example on the Dell webpage shows three sets and my old drive has four.   I see another set of wires connected to the new one, do I need this for the old one also?

Leave it jumpered the way it was (as cable select). Just connect it to the middle (slave) connector, and enable it in BIOS setup.
