Hi Gov,

A good habit, first go to Device Manager, select the broken drive, click Uninstall, then shutdown. Dell ships their systems using the Cable Select Feature, set the jumper on the drive to CS and most DVD/RW tend to prefer the Master position, which with Cable Select will be "end" connection Top Bay.

Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 4 for tips on installation as well as links to Dell`s specification pages for your system.

Best Regards

Hi Gov,

If you Uninstall the / a drive from Device Manager and re-boot, Windows will re-detect the drive once more.
Again this is not set in stone, simply a good habit, when you are ready to install the new drive, uninstall the old one from Device Manager and shut down, replace the old drive and then re-boot.

Best Regards
