Dell only ships DVD+R/RW burners in their systems. There are reports that they may have now started shipping new LG GWA4040N dual format burner but I'm yet to see anyone confirming they got it. Friend of mine got LG GCA4040N which only burns +R format.
Unless you have "new" GWA model you cannot use DVD-R discs, only DVD+R will work.

Is your burner a DVD-R or a DVD+R? Yes, it does make a difference.

I have a HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GCA-4040N
My disks say DVD-R. I have a 600m Inspiron.
