CDRW in Inspiron 8100 has power, doesn't spin

Question

I have an I8100 notebook, with an internal Sony CRX700E CDRW drive, with WinXP.  It has worked fine in the past.  Now it does not spin.  It will open and close, and the green light blinks a couple times, but the CD doesn't spin.  I tried deleting it from the device mgr and letting XP find it and install it.  I tried removing the drive and putting it back in.  It shows as working in Device Mgr.  It shows up in the BIOS setup screen as enabled. Is there anything else I can try, or should I assume the drive has failed, and replace it?  (it's not under warranty) Thanks

sounds to me like the motor has failed. since you have nothing to loose, see if you can find an updated firmware for it though I doubt that you'll see any change with the new firmware.
