How many drives do you have on your computer ?,Your Ide controller only supports four,Two on the primary and two on the secondary, if you have more, than you must use a promise card, that will support four more. When you installed the second hard drive where did you install it?. it should go on the primary , and the other two drives dvd drive and the dvd burner on the secondary . All should be cable select. Are you using a zip drive also?( I believe the hard drive that came with the computer is on the primary. I would put the dvd burner in the top rack and the dvd drive in the bottom,

Oh dear,

Robert, thank you so much for trying to help but I really am only a beginner in the technical side of computers!

My second hard drive was installed by PC World. My external DVD is connected via USB.

What do you mean by Zip Drive?

Should I take profession help with this one?

Thanks.

ok I guess  you don't have it on there ,its another small drive that would go on either the primary or secondary controller. The reason why I asked  was if you did have it on there it would be five and that would give you problems , One thing you can do is do a disk clean up and then get rid of all your cookies and then defrag I know after I make a movie  I have to defrag , when I go into defrag it is all red  and that means a good many files are fragmentated the computer runs slow .and have problems trying to make the computer run like it suppose to

Hi flowermad,

Dealing with video, keeping the hard drive defragged as Bob suggested is an excellent idea.
I believe your problem may be related to your USB ports, your 8100 has only USB 1.1 and many external DVD burners tend to work better on USB 2.0 and/or Firewire. I would urge you to consider installing a PCI USB 2.0 controller card, actually there are cards that support both USB 2.0 and Firewire, comes in handy if perhaps you get a digital camera.
Check out New Egg for the card.

Best Regards
