Are you sure it's not "firmware" instead of firewire?  Firewire is an external I/O similar to USB.  The "upgrade the firmware" (the logic in the DVD) sounds more like it.    Doublecheck

I was wrong it is Firmware.

There is some Dell firmware updates for some drives.  Jeff (Predator) may have the info on these or check the Dell Downloads.  You want to only use Dell firmware updates on Dell supplied OEM drives.

Please post the model number of your DVD drive.  It is needed to direct you to the firmware updates (if there is any for the particular drive).

Here is a link to Predator's site and the list and links to the available firmware updates.  You must have the exact model number of your DVD drive.  Installing the wrong DVD drive model firmware update can trash your drive (if you can even get it to install).  Link to updates

Hi Goirishund,
Jack is currently off-line but I would suggest you try the media first, then the Firmware. Dell-Stephen has a post on the Firmware locked-in at the top of this conference on the subject of the NEC 1100a.
Click on the CD/RW gif in my post and scroll to Section 8-3, article 11 for the on going saga of the drive.

Best Regards

My DVD drive is  a NEC DVD+RW ND-1100A. After reading the other post on this subject should I download the Firmware or try to use Fuji media first? What do you think is best. Thanks for the help you have already given me.

Jeff,

I tried new media meaning the Fuji DVD+R. No luck. I am moving on to trying the firmware upgrade. I don't mind having to do all of this to get a DVD, but it does get to me that I am using the software and hardware that dell gave me with my computer and it doesnt work. Why are they putting burners in computers that dont work with the software that they provide. This is why I didnt get a Gateway. My next computer will be a Mac at this rate. Sorry, but thank you for letting me vent.

Hi Go Irish,
Vent away my friend, the NEC 1100a has left a "bad taste" to a large number of Members, the firmware did seem to help many, but sadly not all. If it does not correct your problem, conatact Dell bye phone, be firm but polite, I am sure they (Dell) knows the drill on this drive.
Good luck
