I have a Dim. 4400, 3 years old, with CD-RW drive using Roxio 5.1. Just purchased a Dim. 4700 with CD-RW drive that came with Sonic DLA 7.3. I have found CD's formatted and containing data can't be used in both computers meaning they may read but will not allow adding or editing data. Apparently the programs Roxio and Sonic are not compatible. Questions:
1) Is there a way to make the programs compatible?
2) If not, I assume I will need to use the same program on both computers. Which program Roxio or Sonic would be preferable?
3) Will I need to uninstall Roxio or Sonic before loading the program that will be used?
4) Finally, why would Dell sell computers with programs that are not compatible or at least advise of that fact during ordering to allow a choice of programs?

I was just playing with this last week and I found that media formatted by DLA was writable with DCD 5.3.2.34, which is the only version I could test with.

However if the media was formatted with Roxio, it was not interchangeable…

Both programs are packet writers and normally one does not expect them to be interchangeable.

GBTO:

Although I appreciate Jim's homework, I'm not a big fan of any packet-writing program for just the reasons we are discussing. Compatibility. However, I've found that the good old Windows XP CD-writing wizard, although slow, is capable of multi-session writing, so nearly as convenient without the compatibility problems. Try that and see if you don't agree.

Thanks, Osprey4 and Jim,
Ok, now I'm confused. Where do I find or access Windows XP CD-writing wizard? Sonic is the only program showing.

Good Point!!! I too use XP Burning which produces a Data CD w/Sessions.

Sorry, this is sort of built-in so you won't find it as a separate program. Open Windows Explorer, select the file(s) you want to write to the disc, right click the selected files, hover over Send to, then select CD-RW (or DVD-RW) drive. Windows will copy the files to a temporary location and a little (annoying) bubble will pop up telling you there are files waiting to be written to the CD. Click that and a box will pop up showing files on the disc and files waiting to be written to the disc. Click File, Write these files to CD.

As I said, this is a little slow compared to your regular burning program, but it can do multi-session and it's really convenient. It does not work with DVD-RW (nor would you want to do that, since it's too slow).

Thanks Osprey,
One further question. Will the data disk need to be formatted prior to use as I am now required to do using either the Roxio or Sonic programs. If so how will that be done?
