Need New Hard Drive for 2600..Why doesn't Dell offer any?

Hi...  I need a new HD for my Inspirion 2600. It went out of warranty in May..and of course it was after that that it started giving me trouble. Out of the blue it started crashing and giving me 'Operating System Not Found' and 'Boot Volume Unmountable' errors. I did the whole recovery console thing but it still crashes. Sometimes when I boot up it'll be fine then 30min or more later it crashes and won't boot up. Sometimes when I boot up it goes into scan disk and says something about the file system being corrupt. This is a clean system..I reformatted the HD about 3 months before this garbage started happening and reinstalled Windows. It's not used to connect to the net, and nothing is on it but WinXP and Office 2000.  I am not entirely sure it's the HD, but if it's anything else that means it's unfixable. From what I've read Inspirons have garbage fans that die fairly quickly allowing the system to overheat. Considering how much I paid for mine it infuriates me to think Dell used substandard parts.  Anyway I got on Dell to purchase a new HD and was infuriated to find they don't offer any for my system...all the other systems have plenty of replacement drives to chose from but not the 2600? Why? I looked at the 'Universal' ones but I have no idea what one will work in my laptop.  I've emailed Dell and gotten nothing but useless canned responses. I've called and gotten put on hold and hung up on. Can anyone here tell me where I can buy a new HD for my 2600 and why Dell offers replacement parts for all it's systems but the 2600? Thank you. mobile hdd's are standardized across all manufacturers and makes.

try www.zipzoomfly.com for cheap drives (you need a 2.5in IDE drive).

you'll have to take the old HDD out of the caddy and putting the new one in. You'll also need to (probably) take the blade off of the end of the old drive and carefully attach it to the new one.

You don't need a replacement caddy, the new hard drive goes into the old caddy.
