I'm not certain what system setup you're referring to, but in Device Manager under Disk Drives, the new drive shows up as 'Generic IDE Drive Type47'.

I'm on my third and fourth hard drives in my 4100 and the 90-90 works fine. Is the drive showing up properly in system setup?

Osprey -- Thanks for the guidance on system setup.  I'll check the system setup this evening and report back what I found.  On the chance that the drive is NOT listed under the IDE configuration submenu when I check, what would be my next move?

By system setup, I'm referring to the BIOS. To access this:

  1. Turn on (or restart) your computer.
  2. When the blue Dell logo appears, press .

If you wait too long and the operating system begins to load into memory, let the system complete the load operation. Then shut down the computer and try again.

Check the IDE configuration submenu under the Advanced menu. Make sure your drive is listed there.

Okay, I went to System Setup at boot, and under the Advanced tab:

> IDE Configuration

   >  IDE Controller    [Both]

  • Primary IDE Master   [WDC WD800JB-00FMA0]
  • Primary IDE Slave     [not installed]

Thus under system setup, the new drive is correctly listed with exact model number.

Interestingly, in the Device Manager, under Disk Drives, the new drive is listed as 'Generic IDE Disk Type47'.  Any thoughts as to why System Setup and Device Manager don't identify the drive the same way??

Try the Force IDE device redetect: boot to system setup, turn on caps lock, scroll lock, & number lock. Press ALT+E then ALT+F, save settings & exit.

Osprey -- I tried the forced IDE redetect, but the Device Manager still lists the new drive as 'Generic IDE...' while in the boot system setup, the IDE Configuration does list the drive as a WD800JB.  And I still can't get the ALT+CTL+D BIOS 90-90 HDD diagnostic to work.

So, I've given up since the new drive works fine.  Instead, I've downloaded and installed the Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows from the Western Digital website to monitor my drive health.

Thank you very much for your guidance, though.
