theres a different part number for example if you look at your dell packing slips. It has Item number of this format 234-3949 then over a little bit it has part number of this format R5017.

Dell has 2 nec 3500 series dvd burners.  The 3450a and 3530a.  I used to have a 3450a, then a 3530a, then philipis 8631, and now a 3530a.

The 3530 is so new there are now patches for this one.

the 3450a has good reviews on other forums.

my 1st 3530a wouldn't play or burn, while my sony does good all the time.  Having 2 dvd players and one that works great all the time helps in troubleshooting.

The 8631 will play and burn but won't play what it burned.  The sony plays all, zero problems.

Those of you who were lucky enough to get a NEC drive in your computers can you look at your packing slips and tell me the part number written there?

nec 3450a item # 463-4682.  I have both packing slips and only an item number is listed.

the 1st PC the DVD RW was listed as nec 3450a item # 463-4682

the 2nd PC the DVD RW was listed nec 3530a item # 463-4682

so the item number doesn't change.

I had a new dvd drive sent to me, but they can never tell u what drive they are sending.  They only tell me the make, not model.  They said they sent me a NEC, but cannot be sure of the model number.

The part number must not be a criteria for Dell.  You cannot order this DVD drive as a part/addtion to your PC.  I check the other DVD drives they have on their website.  So if I bought a PC from Dell with no DVD drive, then my choice of Drives would not be the ones they install.  Because, this way Dell knows if you bought that drive as an addition later.

Talk to another support tech, they are not all the same.  Insist on a NEC replacement.  I asked for some advice and got bad advice.  I went from a NEC to a Philips and now back to an NEC.  So they did give me those choices.
my case number for reference for the new DVD is # 101374059

try part number # H9195 for a nec 3530a

I tried odering a new dell 8400 and all that is listed is a code "DVD RW" and a sku number

313-3008][420-5079

my guess is they give u what's available.  The best U can do is ask for an NEC
