Trying to add a ide hdd to a sata open connector

Question

Hi all! Sorry to bother you, but i am ready to toss my new '200gb' ata hdd and go buy another hdd that is Sata. I have a 4700c. It came with a 80gb sata hdd. I purchased a 200gn ata hdd. I have 2 dvd devices on the ide cable and this motherboard only has one ide connector. I went out and purchased a sata adapter and a sata cable. Took apart the brackets and connected everything. I connected the new ata hdd to a sata adapter and connected the sata wire to the open sata slot. it tells me it cannot see any devices.   According to the service manual for the 4700 it says to follow the harddrive insturctions. Ok. on the 80gb sata hdd there is a mention of the jumper settings but not what is master/slave or cable select. I am not sure if it matters with sata. I went into bios and thought i had set it to check for devices on all. I tried one time to place on the 80 sata hdd the jumper where i thought it might go. when i do that it reads no device at all. I needed to unplug the 'new' hdd and reboot and it allows me to continue on. Any ideas? (worse case is i go out and buy a sata hdd. I can hang onto the ata for later, but i know it should work. i just seem to be missing something) thanks for your help and assistance. al

Set the jumper to Cable Select on the Hard drive.

well that didnt fare well. I removed old hdd(sata) and connected new one (ata w/adapter)...nothing. so i switched ports with the sata cables... still in same boat. system doesnt recognize new hdd.   thanks for the help

thanks for the reponse!   i cannot find documentation on the sata drive to determine what is cable select. and no when i installed both it found neither hdd. (does that help?)   /bow

i would have to say no. so i would remove original hdd, connect the new one and reboot? (by remove i meant to say disconnect it from system?)

Correct, put in the new SATA drive and see if the bois sees it.

i did that already, by removing the jumper on the 200gb and the 80gb hdd doesnt "show" me what the jumper settings are. i had to guess. (the manual states that the master hdd needs to be on master settings and the new one as slave, (which is done by removing the jumper).

hiyas! I have yet to try to move the hdd to a ide slot. (that would require me removing one of my dvd players. (i have a dvd burner on the other end of the ide cable). i was hoping to use the open sata port.
(thats why i am going with a diff motherboard for my DIY rig)

r i will just give up.. it shouldnt be this dang hard. with the way its going, i am probably missing a step somewhere. thanks for the help..anyone else have a idea?
