One of our Members, Andrew installed a Plextor 716SA in his 8400. Please click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 4, article 12. See if this will help with the installation.

Thanks. I did find a link that seemed to say it would be compatible, so I went ahead and installed. The strangest thing is, it won't play commercially produced DVD's without the picture breaking up really bad. Not only that, but the other DVD drive that is installed (which was working fine before) exhibits the same behaviour. DVD's that I have produced play perfectly, and so does music CD's or data DVD's or CD's.
I'm wondering about the BIOS settings. The Phillips DVD drive is installed with the wide ribbon cable as a PATA drive. It's BIOS setting is Raid Autodetect/AHCI, and shows the controller as Serial ATA. My new Plextor 716SA is installed with the narrow Serial ATA cable in SATA port 1 and I selected the same "Raid Autodetect/AHCI" and it shows the controller as Serial ATA.
I'm wondering if I should have selected one of the other options, but am afraid to try it due to a warning "Changine this setting may prevent your Operating System from booting or require a re-install" (Scary stuff!). The options are: Raid Autodetect/AHCI, Raid Autodect/ATA, Raid ON, and Combination.
I just discovered something interesting. If I play the commercial DVD using Cyberlink Power DVD, it plays with no breaking up. The problem seems to be with Windows Media player. I'm wondering if I need to install a plug-in to Windows Media player to get it to play the commercial DVD's.
