Compatible Hard Drive for DELL Inspiron 8600

Question

My hard drive seems to be dead ..   I have DELL Inspiron 8600,Pentium M, 1.7GHz,15.4in WSXGA+ 60GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive for Inspiron 8600(7200 rpm).. Windows XP Pro ( 1 year 4 months warrant expired)   While booting I get UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME  mesg.. doing chkdsk (/p or /r) and fixboot or fixmbr does not work gives a message saying one or more unrecoverable errors found..   Format- Did a format to NTFS and it competed successfully.. Attempted to reinstall xp again I get the above message.. Does this mean the HDD is dead.. ? Should I replace this? What is the compatible HDD available with DELL? Is there an option to Buy any compatible HDD outside dell if so what are the brands and specs?   Would appreciate answers to the above..   Thank in advance ..

You can buy any 9.5 millimetre high laptop hard drive and it will fit in your computer.
From your description your present hard drive is a Hitachi 7k60 model. You can purchase one from any computer retailer and not restrict yourself to buying it from Dell.

Thanks very much for the reply..   Just one more question.. Can I contact the manufacturer to replace this product? since its only 1 yr and 3 months old? m/f date FEB04. Am I eligilble for Manufacturers warranty? if so is it 3 years.. Would appreciate your advice.. Thanks once again..

Since you bought the hard drive through Dell and it was installed in a computer (OEM), the warranty for the hard drive is the responsibility of Dell.  To be able to use the warranty from the HDD manufacturer, you need to have bought the hard drive as a Retail Product and not OEM.
