The first thing you should try is to physically remove the hard drive then reinstall it. If it was a poor connection problem then hopefully that action would sort it out.
The fact that you describe a clicking sound as you try to boot is ominous and may indicate that the hard drive is dying. I would suggest that if the act of reseating the hard drive fails to cure your problem then boot off the Dell utilities and drive CD and run a diagnostic on the hard drive.
