When you look up the drives in the Device manager, is there an Error Code given?

No, A "!" is marked by both CD & DVD Drives. I tried to troubleshoot but the computer does not detect the drives. When I start the computer, it does give an error code.
mvdc170.dll

Uninstall the drives in the Device Manager ans see if Windows will re-detect
them upon boot-up and install them.  Check the BIOS (Set-up) to be sure they
are detected there.

I do not know what mvdc170.dll is.  Did you recently make some changes to the
computer?  Consider also using the Restore feature and restoring to an earlier
date.

Hi Mascny,

To add with Mike`s ~ Skybird, we have seen this before with iTunes and sorry no the best answer is not exchange the drives. If your Operating system is Windows XP, the chances are good this is an issue with the Upper & Lower Filters; Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 12, article 10. If not XP, then re-load the IDE channel, same CD/RW link Section 20, article 3.

Best Regards

BIOS problem.

Even if the bios is current, download again and reflash.

I think Dell has some major problem with DVD drives.  I didn't know the XPS series has thses problems too.

Did u know that PowerDVD and Realplayer have conflict issues?  Cyberlink told me to dump realplayer.

Do a search on the net for DVD drives.  Many problems and no real solutions.  Type in your model number of the DVD drive.  I did for my Philips 8631, and I am getting an NEC 3530a RW.  Most people will tell you you dump the 8631.

The best answer is check the BIOS and exchange DVD drive.  My! How technical is that?

The rash of "lost drives" started when XP hit the streets!

It is not related to Dell, hardware or software, but falls on MS.

To Jim Hardin:

Thanks for your info that it is a Microsoft Problem.  This is the 1st time I have a good lead on troubleshooting.

Anything forum or other solutions to this?

At least now I know not to panic, basically rebooting the PC is a normal resolution.  I don't have a major problem with this, just a little annoyed.  I won't have to troubleshoot this symtom because there is no fix.

Windows XP64 is on the horizon, hopefully this will be a better system.  Cannot get the CD, because it is still on back order for 2 months now.

MMarinello,

I posted the same information dealing with the Upper & Lower Filters, why are you repeating basically the same information? That is considered bad etiquette and simply rude in this forum, actually any forum on the net. Take the time to read the replies in a thread before posting the same information.
If you require help with an issue, then start a new thread with your issue.

Best Regards

mmarinello1,

Are you sober? You seem to be as eradict in your help as a drunk driver trying to make it home after a long night out partying.

I think you best pull over to the side of the road and park and sleep it off.

Click on the limk above for lost drives or wrong letter assignment.  This is for Windows XP

After you install Microsoft Windows XP, the CD-ROM drive, the DVD-ROM drive, or CD-ROM R/W drive may not be visible in the My Computer window. Additionally, there may be question marks on the devices that are listed under CD-ROM drives in Device Manager.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, use the following methods in the order that they are presented in. Method 1: Remove the registry entry WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
1.Click Start, and then click Run.2.In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.3.Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}
4.On the File menu, click Export.5.In the File name box, type savedkey, and then click Save.6.Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type UpperFilters, and then click Delete on the Edit menu. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.

Note If this data type is missing, go to Method 2.7.Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type LowerFilters, and then click Delete on the Edit menu. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.8.Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer. Method 2: Replace the existing driver1.Click Start, and then click Control Panel.2.If Control Panel is in Category view, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.

If Control Panel is in Classic view, double-click System.3.On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.4.Click the drive with the question mark next to it.5.On the Action menu, click Uninstall. When you are prompted to confirm the removal, click OK.6.Repeat steps 4 through 5 for any other drives with question marks.7.On the Action menu, click Scan for hardware changes
