Latitude c600 put in DVD drive doesn't play, do I need a driver or software?

I have a used Dell Latitude notebook and bought a DVD drive to replace the CD drive.  I think the drive works because I hear it running when I put in a DVD but I think it needs some kind of software to play the DVD.  Anyone know what I need to do?  It has  Windows 98SE OS .

To play a commercial DVD you need to have DVD Decoder software installed.The two most popular are WinDVD and PowerDVD.
