Were they cheap CDs, because sometimes cheap CDs are not balanced well so the can make noise in some drives and the could be the laser moving back and forth
you know how with an xbox, gamecube etc.. when its loading and you here a small electrci moter sound like E EEEE EE EE EEEEE EE, does is sound like that or is it a buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

In floppy drive ( A: ), you know that sound when it tries to read from it but then it makes that sound and tells you to insert a floppy disk. It sounds like ERRRK ERRK.
Now I think there's something worse. I used the Dell Diagnostics and everything checked out okay but when I took out the disc I saw that part of it was chipped off. On the edge of the disk it looks like it's chipped off (the metal piece inside the plastic/glass that holds the data). I don't know when it happened but I just noticed it.
Also when I reinstalled XP I just installed the new chipset driver update download from Intel. Was I supposed to install the original one then install the download from Intel or is it okay?
Both Mike & HTT are currently off-line. The chip may have been the issue all along, this will as mentioned above cause the disc to be off balance. Just to test, burn another CD but this time use a CD-R instead of CD-RW and see how it plays. As for the Chip Set Drivers, well I have seen Members say Intel works best, others say Dells, normally we recommend getting them from Dell`s Downloads site, but if everything is working fine, then you should be OK. Do test another CD-R though.
Best Regards PS: I mean this only in a good hearted way, but I loved the sound stuff guys, reminded me of one those Andy Griffth moments, when that out of town guy was trying to explain the sound of his car to Wally on a Sunday afternoon!!
God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the difference. CD/RW Link
No I mean the Drivers and Utilities CD is chipped. I don't know how it happened but it still works (and it doesn't make noise). Yeah I'll try burning a CD-R instead. I'm gonna reinstall XP and see if it's the driver I'm using.
My bad and this is indeed a strange one because normally a chip, crack, label, etc will throw a disc off balance, I guess another good reason to say nothing in this wonderful PC is 100% or set in stone ;) !
Let us know how the CD-R works, again it may simply be that one CD/RW disc especially since even the chipped one works !
Best Regards

Amazing. I reinstalled XP, tried burning a CDR, reinstalled the CD-ROM driver, then tried enabling the "Close Disc" option and NOW IT FINALLY WORKS! Kinda stinks because if I want to update the CD I gotta erase it then reburn everything again.
For the CDRW, if it's a "closed disc", then can I delete a single file from it then reburn? Or do I have to erase it then reburn?
You cannot truly close a CD/RW in regards as one can a CD-R. Also you cannot erase a CD-R either. How you address files on a CD/RW depends again on the software you are using.
Best Regards

Sony CD-RW650
Multispeed 1x 2x 4x
650 MB in ISO 9660 Mode-1 format
Before I burned the second CD I checked it and it seemed fine. Then I burned it at 4x with Burn4Free. After I burned it I think it's messed up.

I'm worried because other people told me that the CD could break the CD-ROM.

slightly to read the disk. Thus, the sound may be the optical head seeking.

Now I'm wondering why the Dell CD is chipped.:(
