You can try running the CHKDSK utility to check the file system for errors that may be causing it to hang.  If you have multiple disks (or partitions) you'll need to run this separately for each drive letter.

Click Start | Run and type CHKDSK C: /F (the /F is the Fix command) and hit ENTER.

Normally Windows will report back that the drive is locked or in use and can be checked on the next reboot.  Hit Y and then reboot your computer.  During the boot you should see the system run through the utility and it will report any changes it made to the file system as well as any bad sectors that are on the hard drive.

If you have more than one drive letter (second hard drive or a partitioned drive), simply re-run the steps above but substitute the next drive letter for C:.
