No matter which program I've used (Nero, Roxio, Alcohol, Easy DVD, Sonic, etc.) they all have taken ~15 minutes to produce a DVD.

In addition, where applicable, the peak write speed has NEVER exceeded 5X.

I'll be reporting back once the new drive arrives (hopefully they are actually shipping one this time).

sport46, excellent reference information.

Hi Everyone,

Reporting back FINALLY. Seems Dell "lost" my order yet again, so on Monday a "new" order was put in.

Good and bad news... first the good:

- received new DVD drive today by courier
- drive is now burning SUSTAINED speed of 8X (no change in software etc.)

Bad news...

- Dell didn't replace my 6500 with a 6500, instead they shipped a 6650!

So unfortunately I will never know if it was the drive itself, or that model of drive.

I suppose I will have to settle without the answer, at least burning speed is now as promised when the laptop was purchased.

What dvd media are you using? I just received this drive and I am only getting 2.5x burn speed. This drive was manufactures in AUG 2005 and firmware is 102c.

Your early response will be appreciated.

Thanks

I'm using Taiyo Yuden 16X (my other DVD is 16X) with mine.  Still burning along at full speed.

Rev A00, made in China, Aug 2005, with the 102c firmware.

What software are you using to burn?

I use Nero 6.6 the most.

What does Nero say the max speed is for the DVD player?  When I was having problems before, Nero was saying that the max the 6500 could burn was 4x regardless of the media I used.

well nero 6.6 says 8x but again if it is taking 15minutes to burn a dvd then it is not 8x. Actually I received the burner yesterday and have not tried other softwares but nero....  i will try nero and see what speed i get and report back.

Thanks again for your ealry replies.

I tried nero 6.6 on memorex 16x and it still takes 20mintues which means it is burning at 2.5x.

Is the device manager showing it as in Ultra DMA mode also?

Was just thinking also... do you have speedstep enabled?

Try disabling the SpeedStep (to force the CPU to run at full speed) and see if that makes any difference.

My drive is burning a dvd in less than 8 minutes now, at full 8X... maybe you got another bad drive?  Personally, I wouldn't trade this 6650 for any 6500... my 6500 would barely sustain 4X.

It's strange though, considering we have what should be identical drives.

Maybe you should call Dell and let them know, in case it's an issue with something else?

yes udma mode 2 is enable ans speed strap is enabled too.. My drive is exactly same as yours manufactured in Aug 2005. I still have ND-6500A which I have to send back to dell within 10 days. ND-6500A is at least burning at 4x speed. I am not sure which one is better model I can keep the same old one and send back the new one ND-6650A.

Thanks

Guess what RZS,

I thought I will install WinXP Pro and see what burn speed I get. When I finally did, I was able to burn 4.1GB in 12minutes with Nero. It was a big difference since It was taking 21 minutes before. I then reloaded the clean image of WinXp home and tried to burn the same 4.1GB on DVD and burn completed in 12 minutes with Nero. I had also reinstalled Nero and so far I am happy with the burn speed I am defenitely going to keep this ND-6650A model and send back ND-6500.

Again, thanks for all your input and quick responses. Feel free to through out questions if you have any problems.

Thanks

Hey Sport46,

Excellent news!  I've heard a lot of people complaining about the software that comes on these things from the factory, and they end up doing pretty much what you said (re-loading the OS etc.).

I'm very happy with my 6650 also.

Thanks for your replies also.
