Sounds like the hard drive has failed, try replacing it.  Any brand of EIDE should be fine, except a Maxtor.
 
If the hard drive does not run, then recovering the data is just about nil, unless you use a data recovery company.

hi, thanks for the reply, yea i figured as much :(:(, ill get a new harddrive and see does that solve the problem

Shop around for the EIDE hard drive, if you are into rebates, there some excellent prices out there.
