Hi Kalbarrie,

Yes have seen this a time or two and hard to narrow down. After installing Windows XP again, did you install the Intel Chipset Drivers?
Is DMA enabled for the drive? Checked for possible updates for your burning software, checked that under the Properties of the drive that the "enable digital Audio box" is checked?

Best Regards

Thanks for the help but I'm afraid nothing has worked. I reinstalled the Intel Chipset drivers - just in case; being a female "silver surfer" I'm afraid I had no idea what DMA was! But I looked on Google, followed the instructions and eventually ended up uninstalling the drive and rebooting. Finally I looked to make sure the "enable digital audio" box was checked and yes it was.

Are there two lasers in there, because I don't understand why it will burn/read DVDs but not CDs (although it did so up until a couple of days ago after I had copied a cd with Nero Ultra and got an error message.

I think the time may have come when I will have to purchase a new dvd/cd burner!

Anyway, thanks again for your help.

Sorry I was not able to help Kal. As for a new DVD/RW, you can get a very good drive, 2 to 3 times better than the 1100 for less mnoey than it cost in the first place.
Give New Egg a try, Retail NEC brands & Pioneer can be found for $50.00 or less.

Best Regards
